Sires and Dams By Nelson Dunstan Keeneland Sales Catalogue Arrives Total of 111 Stallions Represented Heiiopolis Babes Haye High Appeal NEW YORK, N. Y., June 28. At hand is the catalogue of the 363 yearlings the Breeders Sales Company will offer at Keeneland on July 25, 26 and 27. They represent the "whos who" of the equine world for they were selected from 832 colts and fillies entered by over 200 breeders. In the foreword to the booklet, general manager Bill Evans said: "These yearlings are the best our consignors have to offer at public auction. They were selected on the basis of pedigree and conformation." No yearlings by Bull Lea w Mahmoud are entered, but the index of sires lists the names of the majority of the most fashionable and successful ones standing in this country. The largest consignments will be from the Mereworth Farm of the Salmon family, Leslie B. Combs n., Leslie Combs n. and the j latters partners, John W. Hanes and Louis B. Mayer; i Crown Crest Farm of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Reineman, Hurstland Farm of the Nuckols brothers and Elmen-dorf Farm of M. H. Gluck. Regardless of the size of the consignment, quality is the keynote of the Keeneland summer sales for all of the offerings were rigidly inspected. There are many small consignors such as Miss Mildred Woolwine, who will offer only two colts. But veterans tell us that her colt byNoor War Flower, by Man o War hip No. 160, is one of the most impressive consigned this year. He is a half-brother to the stake winners Helioscope and Ace Admiral. Predict Many Keen Bidding Duels A total of 111 sires are represented by one or more colts or fillies. Many are certain to excite keen bidding duels and one group" in this category includes sons arid v daughters of Heiiopolis, the son of Hyperion, who led all American sires in 1954. This year, Heiiopolis is represented by Helioscope, High Guri, Parlo, Summer Tan, Red Hannigah and last Saturday, his daughter Clear. Dawn won the New Castle at Delaware Park. Henry H. Knights Almahurst Farm will have three Heiiopolis youngsters at Saratoga, while down in Kentucky, one colt and three fillies will pass into the hands of new owners, a beautifully bred quartet, the colt being a bay out of the sturdy distance-running mare, Miss Grillo. This colt hip No. 130 is consigned by the Shawnee Farm of Mrs. Parker Poe. Dale Shaffer, who imported Heiiopolis to this country, will sell one of his fillies hip No. 153 and she is a brown out of Romans daughter, Sweet Woman, a winner, and dam of the fine stake winner, Sweet Patootie. In the bottom line, the fourth dam is Rose Leaves, the producer of six stake winners, including Bull Lea. Crown Crest Farm will sell a bay filly by Heiiopolis out of Twinkley, by Bull Lea hip No. 286, and here again is an impressive bottom line, the third dam being Dustwhirl, the producer of Whirl-away and Reaping Reward. The fourth dam, Ormanda, was one of the greatest of her years, producing Os-mand, Brevity, Miss Brief and Golden Melody. T. O. Campbell ends the Heiiopolis parade at Keeneland with a chestnut filly out of Lenore, a daughter of Our Boots and dam of the winners Lecount and Bernley. Alibhai was the second to Heiiopolis on the 1954 leading sires list with Bull Lea, Revoked, Nasrullah, Bernborough, Khaled, Count Fleet, Roman and Shut Out following in that order. With the exception of Bull Lea and Khaled, all of-these sires have youngsters for the Keeneland ring. Coming from the successful farms, it is safe to say that the colts and fillies by these sires will be keenly bid for when under the hammer. A year ago, Nasrullahs babes were eagerly sought, three colts and one filly averaging 0,375. Royal Charger was next with six head averaging 3,167, and Citation third with seven averaging 6,926. There has never been anything quite like it and we wonder what the colts and fillies by these sires will average at the July sales. The Mares Nest Stud John W. Hanes and Leslie Combs n. will offer a chestnut colt by Nasrullah Pocket Edition, by Roman hip No. 135, and Dr. Eslie Asburys Forest Retreat Farm will sell a brown colt by Nasrullah hip No. 258 , out of the Blue Larkspur mare In Bloom, dam of the winners TDalal and Inahmoud. The second dam is the famous mare, Gala Belle, daughter of Sir Gallahad m., who produced the stake winners and sires Revoked, Alabama and Speculation. Only One Nasrullah Filly Consigned The only Nasrullah filly hip No. 267 to be sold at Keeneland this year is a bay out of Nitromond, a daughter of Bull Lea and consigned by the Stoner Creek Stud of Mrs. John D. Hertz. This famous farm also has the only colt by Citation to be offered in Kentucky, and the consignment is completed with a colt by Migoli, a colt nad filly by Spy Song, and two colts and two fillies by Count Fleet, their own stallion. The Citation colt is out of Banish, by Count Gallahad, and the second dam is Blue Larkspurs daughter, Banish Fear, who produced Cosmic Bomb and Fleet Ring. Naturally, Stoner Creek is proud of Count Fleet, arid rightly so. From a pedigree angle one of the. best yearlings to be offered this year is a brown colt out of Sickles daughter Misty Isle, the dam of Cosmic Missile, one of the best race mares of. her years. The Count Fleets are a durable lot and, like good wine, they improve with age. Stoner Creek has the only coltsand fillies by this Triple Crown winner on offer this year. t t if I i i c - X l 4
