, Naylor Sells 55 Head for 02,300 Average of ,31 5 Obtained; 3 7 Broodmares Net $ 31 1 ,800 Matrons Average ,427 to 4 Better Mayer Sale Figure; Mrs. Lunn Pays Top Price By KENT COCHRAN Staff Correspondent LOS ANGELES, Calif., June 28. The W. W. "Tiny" Naylor dispersal sale of breeding stock here turned out to be the greatest in California since Louis B. Mayer sold his broodmares in 1948t Acting for Naylor, Fasig-Tipton on Monday afternoon disposed of 55 head for a total of 02,300, an average of ,315. The broodmares highlighted the vendue, 37 of the dams bringing 11,800 for an average of ,427, against Mayers mare average of 0,050 in the lush postwar period. Fifteen yearlings averaged ,800. A few head of miscellaneous stock made up the balance of the stock sold. Auctioneer George Swinebroad was in fine voice, as was young John Finney, son of the Fasig-Tipton president, Humphrey Finney. John Finney did the announcing, as he did last January at Pomona, though this time he was replaced for a portion of the session by Ralph Retler, a new member, of the firm. We estimated the crowd at 500, and noted that nearly all were bona fide horsemen, there being few present who were "merely looking." Mrs. Richard Lunn, the former Liz Whitney, was the big buyer of the afternoon. She took six "head for 62,200, including the five-year-old mare Jana, by Alibhai Jane Gail and therefore a half-sister to Hill Gail, which topped the sale at 7,000. Other high priced purchases by the Upper-ville, Va. sportswoman whose Llangollen Farm stable is in action here at Hollywood Park under trainer Charlie Whittingham, were Woo-Me-Now, a two-year-old filly by Menow, and the mares Bundle, by Bull Lea, Childs Play by Discovery, Dixie Lady by Bull Lea, and Gold Salute by Alibhai. Ellsworth Holds Interest in Mares After the sale we learned that Rex Ellsworth had taken a 50-50 partnership with Mrs. Lunn in ownership of Jana and Gold Salute. These two Alibhai mares are scheduled to be taken to Ellsworth Ranch, there to be mated through the years, with Khaled, the sire of Swaps. The matings would be rather close-up inbreeding, since both Alibhai and Khaled are sons of Hyperion. Ellsworth has had good results from mating one of his Alibhai mares with Khaled for the last several years, he told us. Still another high-figure sales was registered when Mrs. Ada L. Rices Danada Farm went to 3,000 to obtain Sincerely, a daughter of Heliopolis, and her Kings Abbey foal at side. The mare is also in foal to Kings Abbey. This reminds that nearly all of the 37 mares which- went through the sale had foals at side and were stated to be again in foal. They therefore comprised three-in-one sales packages. - Mrs. Ann Peppers paid 0,000 for Cactus Bud, five-year-old mare by Bull Lea Spur Flower, by Blue Larkspur, certified as safely in foal to Kings Abbey. President Louis R. Rowan and the local breeders association which sponsored the sale, stated that the prices obtained augured well for the big August sale of selected yearlings at Del Mar late in August. "Another bullish sign was the fact that buyers showed up from seven, states other than California and bought horses," he said. "This indicates that still others were on hand and bidding, but were un- successful. Theres an undoubted widening interest in our local sales, and this surely is reason to expect that our averages at Del Mar will be as high or higher than last years very successful sale." -The complete summary follows: Monday, June 27, 1955 Property of W.
