National TV Hookup For Carter Handicap Aqueducts July 4 Stake to Show Helioscope, High Gun in Sprint AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 28. The 0,000 added Carter Handicap, worlds richest sprint for older horses, will be telecast over a national hookup on Monday, July 4, it was announced today by Cyrus S. Jullien, president of the Queens County Jockey Club, operators of Aqueduct. The seven-furlong dash, however, will not be seen by viewers in the Metropolitan area because of the inability of the American Broadcasting Company to clear the time locally, due to prior commercial commitments. Aqueduct, co-operating in the telecast, realized the great national interest in the expected return meeting between the two best handicap horses in training, William G. Helis, Jr.s Helioscope and King Ranchs High Gun. The pair put on a thrilling exhibition in the recent Suburban at Belmont, Helioscope winning by a head over the favored High Gun. In that race High Gun, weighted at 133 pounds, conceded five pounds-to his rival. In the Carter, equal weight, 133 pounds, has been assigned to the pair. The Carter, oldest stake in the Metropolitan area run over, the same track, will have its fifty-fifth running on Monday. Inaugurated in 1895, a year following the opening of Aqueduct, the race was named for a Captain Carter, a Brooklyn racing enthusiast who put up the 00 purse money. The Carter attracted international attention in the 1944 renewal when Brownie, Bossuet and Wait A Bit finished in a triple tie for first place, marking the only three-way dead-heat to win in stakes history. On Saturday, July 2, television viewers will see the regularly scheduled telecast of the 0,000 added Dwyer Stakes, premier offering of Aqueduct for three-year-olds at a mile and one-quarter. Belair Studs Nashua, leading eastern aspirant for three-year-old honors, heads the field.
