Many New Names on List Of Detroit Officials - McAuliffe Heads Roster as Racing Secretary; Daniel His Assistant DETROIT, May 9. — Many new names dot the roster of Detroit Race Courses official family for the thoroughbred meeting which gets underway Wednesday, May 20. Heading the list is Robert P. McAuliffe, who has replaced Frederick "Pat" Farrell as racing secretary. Although a newcomer to the DRC, McAuliffe is not a stranger to the Detroit area. He serves as racing secretary at Hazel Park, where he has also been a steward. Now a steward at Chicagos Sportsmans Park, McAuliffe has served in nearly every official capacity around a race track in a career that spans 28 years. McAuliffes right hand man is John C. Daniel, another racing veteran. Daniel, who will serve as assistant racing secretary, is completing a tour of duty as racing secretary at Sportsmans A new corps of patrol judges will also be in action this year. J. H. Ellis, who served as DRC placing judge last season, is joining newcomers Howard" Battle Jr., and Henry Hauer in the patrol towers. Making up the stewards stand are John Kennedy, who represents the State of Michigan; Dr. James G. Catlett and H. H. "Pete" Battle. All three served last year. John A. Hughey and Raymond Hopton, the 1958 placing judges,.are also returning. Daniel will join them in the judges stand. Other holdovers from last year include William Kelly, paddock judge; N orris Gwin, clerk of scales; James Gruber, timer; and John Morrissey, starter.
