4 Two Six Charlie Comes Right Back in Sprint at Churchill * Carries 121 Pounds to Neck Accounting Over Jack Fly nn Betore Crowd of 21,000 By BUD LYON Staff Correspondent CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 9. — Delighting* most in the crowd of over 21,000 here this afternoon Two Six Charlie, from the R. and M. Stable of Mrs. G. Raines and C. C. Moore, accounted for the Broomstick Purse while eking out a neck decision at the expense of E. A. and T. E. Bischoffs Jack, Flynn in the 6-fur-long dash. Mrs. A. Bellardi and T. I. Har-kins Benedicto held on for show money while finishing nearly two lengths farther back. Two Six Charlie ably demonstrated his vaunted speed and under the handling of Don Brumfield the Crocodile gelding raced the three-quarters mile in 1:10%, while returning .40, as -a solid choice with the fansr Breaking from the barrier over on the backside it was Benedicto who asserted himself to immediately draw into a clear lead and coast through the opening quarter in a sizzling :221/5. The Fighting Fox gelding maintained the pace to reach the half mile point in :45y5. following which he commenced to tire noticeably as this was his first outing since September. Even so Benedicto continued to show the way right to the eighth pole where he gave way rather suddenly when collared by Jack Flynn. That the race should help Benedicto would go without saying asj[ast year he could hold his speed all the way against this type company. Duel in Mid-Stretch Shortly after Jack Flynn assumed pace-making duties in midstretch he was joined by the eventual winner who ranged up along the outside at this point and joined in a do-or-die duel with the Bischoff color-Bearer. However, the result was in doubt until the final stride or two at which time Two Six Charlie suddenly came forth with that little something extra and grabbed the major portion of this ,000 prize. The victory was the second in succession for Two Six Charlie and a big one as he had his weight up today, 121 pounds, and conceded gobs of poundage to the remainder with the exception of Sage of Alief. Kenny Church registered a riding double by accounting for the fourth race with J. Graham Browns Mr. Grace and the fifth with Earl Gaar and John McShanes I Say No. Mr. Grace was picking up his first purse in three outings for the year and raced the 6 furlongs in 1:11%, while defeating Three-Four Stables Prince Bound by three parts of a length. It was another length and one-half back to Mrs. Lotti Wolfs I Dot. who charged up from far back in the 12-horse field of claimers. The Louisville-owned Mr. Grace paid 2.60. Padgett, proved a repeat winner in the opening when the five-year-old entire son of Bolero emulated his sire by registering a front-running victory in that 6-furlong claimer. The stallion was in hand* to reach the end fourth lengths before S. I. Crews Connie-Cat while Clare Pearces Wailabhai held on to keep the show spot finishing another length and one-half back. The winner, a former high-priced claimer, humbled his 11 opponents with one big burst of speed through the upper stretch under the handling of Bob Dever to shoot into a three-length lead and just coasted the remainder of the way to appear much the best. Thomas Aquinas raced the three-quarters in 1:11%, and as a solid choice with the fans he returned but .40. Cadwood, flying the familiar blue and red silks of the Clear Springs Stable of Mr. and Mrs. William Reynolds and O. D. Riley Jr., electrified the entire crowd when the two-year-old filly dashed to a front-running victory in the second to combine forces with Thomas Aquinas and set up a 81.60 Daily Double payoff. The roan daughter of Escadru emerged a driving winner by just a. neck at the expense of Countess Ann with the show horse, Miss Startan, finishing a like distance farther back. The favorite, Electrum, finished fourth after having raced much of the way in that position Cadwood raced the 5 furlongs in :59%, while picking up her maiden victory and paid 4.40, with W. B. Williams receiving credit as the jockey.
