_ Ascot Park Renews Gold Cup Saturday Will Gross Over 3,000; Entangler Regarded Early Choice in Two Miles Test By Staff Correspondent ASCOT PARK, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, May 9. — The eighteenth running of the Ascot Gold Cup at 2 miles will highlight the semi-final week of racing at this track. First presented in 1941, the Gold Cup has grown from an original purse of 00 to 0,000 added this year and will gross well over 3,003 for the richest renewal in the history of the race. Under the novel qualifying feature of the race, any horse that wins at the Akron course distance of 33-feet short of one and five-sixteenths miles, gets preference in the Gold Cup itself with racing secretary Charles Henry adding another 00 to the Gold Cup purse each time a qualifying race fills and is run. At present there are 12 horses with winners preference with two or three more qualifying races scheduled before the actual running on Saturday. Entangler Set Track Record Mrs. Laura L. Hamills Entangler stamped himself as the one to beat in the Gold Cup when the English-bred set a new track record last Thursday over the Akron Course distance. The Peter Flower — Spiders Web gelding was timed in 2:14 for the distance while defeating George Bills Jr.s Deadly Actor under equal weight of 119 pounds. Trained by former steeplechase jockey Bill Owen, Entangler was very impressive and undoubtedly will be high among Henrys weights for the Gold Cup, which are due Thursday. Raymond Loughlins Reinspect, a three-time winner over the Akron course at this meeting, is another who will rate high among Gold Cup nominees with the aforementioned Deadly Actor and Edward Klammers Golden Lark trying to gain preference for the race. The track record for 2 miles here is 3:25%, set by Chif f on 4n 1951.
