River Downs to Schedule Nine Races Throughout Meet CINCINNATI, May 9. — There will be nine races scheduled each day of the River Downs. meeting which opens May 29. A recent ruling of the Ohio Racing Commission permits adding a ninth or extra race Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays providing the event is either for Ohio-owned or Ohio-bred horses. As nine races normally are carded on Wednesdays and Saturdays, it will make for a daily nine race card. Racing secretary James P. Ross Jr., who is at his desk daily, explained that the new ruling is designed to aid Ohio owners and breeders "get in more racing on their home grounds. "The new ruling states clearly that the field must be filled with Ohio-owned or bred horses. If we get only half a field of Ohio horses and would need out of state entries to fill, the race would be off," Ross declared. Leon Slavin, president and general manager of the local course, heartly endorses the possibility of a ninth race daily. "We feel this ruling will not only benefit Ohio horsemen but will further interest among the race-going public. In any sport, fans have shown a keener interest when they are familiar with the participants and that is doubly true in thoroughbred racing where owners, trainers, jockeys and horses provide added color." Slavin and Ross will strive to write a ninth race daily for Ohio runners and he is hopeful the events will fill without difficulty.
