Crack Field in Pimlico#s Preakness Prep Monday Manassa Mauler, Royal Orbit And Master Palynch in Line-up By CHARLES HATTON PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 9.— The richest Preakness will be heralded Monday by one of the most significant runnings of the Preakness Prep when the Wood winner, Manassa Mauler, the western invader Royal Orbit, the Luisiana Derby winner. Master Palynch, and other eligibles for next Saturdays 50,000 added classic meet at **1 1-16 miles. Also flexing their muscles in the ,000 feature signalling Preakness Week will be the King Ranch team of Black Hills and Call the Witness and the interloper Marauder, who is not in the second of the American Triple Crown events. Under the terms of the Prep, the romantic careerist Manassa Mauler, a 2,500 claim who paid 0,000 to become a supplementary candidate for the Preakness after beating First Landing in the Wood, Continued on Page Eight ► . ,, . . 4 N r I_ ,,, ,,, l%l, --,• BLACK HILLS— Starts in the Preakness Prep Monday. Crack Field Vies in Preakness Prep Manassa Mauler Is Topweighf at 120 Wood Winner Meets Royal Orbit, Master Palynch and Biack Hills in Monday Test Continued from Page One will have the doubtful honor of carrying top weight of 120 pounds. He must concede the nimble Chicagoan, Master Pa-lynch, four pounds, each of the others eight pounds Manassa Mauler is making his second venture since he amazed everyone by beating the Derby favorite in the Wood. He ran third last week to Charfran Stables Crafty Skipper in the six-furlong Jamaica Handicap but he will have considerable jsupport in the Prep, along with Royal Orbit, who strikes those who saw the Derby as a plausible choice at the weights. Breaking from number 17, Royal Orbit was fourth and rapidly becoming third at the end of the Downs classic, making up 14 lengths. Additionally, he went a mile publicly in 1:391/5 with impressive elan yesterday. In years gone by, the Prep has produced several interesting and fairly fraught results, sometimes as an overnighter, at others as an exhibition. Bold Ruler telegraphed his Preakness blows in the Prep. He was the only Prep winner to manage this double although five others were in the money. Correlation fought it out grimly with Hasty Road in he Prep, prevailing by a neck while bearing in, then the order was reversed in another setto in the Preakness. Gone Fishin won the Prep in an exhibition a year ago, then was third in - the main event. Manassa Mauler had speed on demand this morning, skipping through 5 furlongs in :23, :314/s, :48 and 1:01, then galloping out 6 furlongs in 1:14. The track was fast, as you might guess. He drew the rail in the gate for the Prep and is to be ridden by the familiar Ray Broussard. R. L. Stevenson was named for Master Palynch, who anticlimaxed his New Orleans form running fifth to First Landing in the second half of the Derby Trial. Sammy Boul-metis has the leg up on Black Hills. No rider was named for any of the others this morning, though Nick Shuk worked Royal Orbit on Friday, if that suggests anything. The Californian, incidentally, breaks from the outside in the Prep, the feather-footed Master Palynch from midway the field. Pen Bolero Doubtful Yesterdays Pimlico Merchants Association Purse of 1 1-16 miles may have made some incursion on the list of Preakness probables, with a possibility of more to come in the Prep. Mrs. Ben Cohens Pen Bolero becomes a doubtful starter, and while Llangollens "distanced" Mosby is not officially out, he personally seemed bent on backing out of the Preakness picture. Conversely, the obscure Briton, Robey S. Lytles Sundown II., did not do too badly in giving the successful Weather Prophet, a non-eligible, nine pounds and running him to a half length. Trainer Eddie Cox this morning said of Sundown II.: "I thought he held on very well for a colt that has been so lightly trained. It was only his fourth time around turns and the first time he had ever gone more than a mile. It was a vast improvement over his last race, in Kentucky, exactly what I wanted of him. He is a definite Preakness starter." As you may know the son of Hyperion, bred by Queen Elizabeth H., only arrived here last December 5. He ran several fast races in California in the early spring and was to have started in the Derby but injured himself at Keene-land when he cast a shoe in a race. Manassa Mauler was not the only candidate for the Prep to breeze this morning, i Black Hills traversed a half mile in :46, the quarter in :23 and three furlongs in :34%. The less well known Call the Witness accompanied him in the early phases of this move but throttled down to :47% for a half and continued on to 5 furlongs in 1:00 flat. How Field Shapes Up In no need of the Prep, but pointing for the Preakness, Rico Tesio also worked this morning. He sauntered 5 furlongs in 1:02%. Mrs. Dodge Sloanes Sword Dancer was on the track for a canter and he and Festival King are to train seriously tomorrow morning, when both are to work. Meanwhile, there is a report from Kentucky that the Preakness status of the Allie Reubenses Oceanic II., who rated second only to the remarkable Tiepoletto in the French Free Handicap of the 1958 two-year-olds, will continge on how he performs in a race this afternoon at Churchill Downs. He was not quite experienced enough to start in the Derby but is said to have schooled to the gate and trained for-wardly since. Thus, the prospective field for next week ends 50,000 classic momentarily begins with Brookmeades favored Sword Dancer Shoemaker and embraces also C. T. Chenerys . First Landing Arcaro , Mrs. Halina Braunsteins Royal Orbit Har-matz , R. S.* Lytles Sundown II. L. Adams, Briardale Farms Rico Tesio M. Ycaza, Elkcam Stables Open "View Kor-te, C. B. Fischbachs Festival King Car-stens , Emil Dolces Manassa Mauler Broussard, Hatskin and Sairs Master Palynch Stevenson, King Ranchs Black Hills Boulmetis and Hasty House Farms Oceanic II. no boy. There are 11 in that array, with a possibility that Rare Rice or Intentionally will encourage their connections to start them through their performances at Garden State Park this afternoon. With a dozen starters this eigthty-third Preakness would gross 91,800 and net the winner 37,700, unless, of course, the supplemental candidate Manassa Mauler were to bring it off. It would net him 29,300. While all this sifting of candidates is going on, The Maryland Jockey Club is looking optimistically forward to a gala Preakness Week in old Baltimore. The program begins this Sunday with the Maryland Horse Breeders1 Associations annual exhibit of yearlings on the old clubhouse lawn. Clarkson Beard will "be the judge. The public is invited to practice its eye for a horse and submit conformation tally cards, with silver plates to those whose preferences coincide closest with Beards. Mondays Prep will be followed Wednesday by a renewal of the 0,000 Black-Eyed Susan, sometimes called the "Preakness for Fillies,8 and the annual flower mart. Saturdays Preakness Day festivities begin at 9:30 a.m., when the gates and the Preakness wagering open simultaneously. Never before were reserved seats in such demand.
