Prop Prop Leads Leads .Pnut Pnut Vendor Vendor to to Finish; Finish; Kiss Kiss Me Me Kate, Kate, Nothirdchance Nothirdchance Upset Upset Capture Divisions Of Acorn Stakes Former 12-Length Victress At Belmont While Latter Is Under Hard Drive to Tally By BOB HOBWOOD Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 23.— Walter M. Jeffords* Kiss Me Kate and Isidore Biebers Nothirdchance scored upset victories in the two divisions of the 0,000 Acorn Stakes this afternoon. Kiss Me Kate galloped home a dozen lengths before Llangollen Farms Wisteria in the first half of the mile fixture, with Apheim Stables Jacodema almost a length farther back and a little more than a length before Starmouht Stables Signal, the favorite. Warren Mehrtens rode Kiss Me Kate, who paid 7.40 and ran the mile in 1:36%, fastest time in the 21-year history of the Acorn, which has been won by some of the best fillies in recent history. Nothirdchance was ridden by Bennie Green, who had to drive hard to get her home three parts of a length before Henry Lewis m.s Gorgeous Reded, who led Be-lair Studs Vulcania by five lengths. A. G. Vanderbilts Sweet Talk was another half length out of the money, while Dell Stables Kentucky Oaks winner, How, was fifth in the role of favorite. Nothirdchance paid a dollar more than Kiss Me Kate and required appreciably longer to get the job done, being timed in 1:38. Feature Run Oyer Sloppy Track The split Acorn was viewed by a throng of 18,474 in exceedingly damp and windy weather. The track was good for the early races, but continued rain made it soupy by the fifth race and the stake was run in slop. Mrs. Thomas Bancroft, a daughter of William Woodward, master of Belair Stud, presented Jeffords with a trophy after Kiss Me Kates victory, while Mrs. Mary McKim, of the Phipps Clan, made the presentation after Nothirdchances triumph. Kiss Me Kate, a chestnut daughter of Count Fleet — Irish Nora, by PharamondTI., Continued on Page Thirty-Nine Kiss Me Kate Captures Acorn Division by Twelve Second Half of Belmont Fixture To Nothirdchance in Hard Drive Continued from Page One was a little tardy in leaving the gate in the first half of the Acorn, but quickly moved into contention on the outside and was right with Jacodema and Wisteria approaching the far turn. Who Dini was a length behind this- trio and the same margin before Merry Xmas, while Miss Meggy was in the middle of the pack and Signal was back in loth place and racing quite wide. Discreet ran into trouble after going a quarter mile and dropped back to last place in a few strides. Rounding the far turn, Kiss Me Kate took command without apparent effort, quickly opening a daylight lead, while Jacodema and Wisteria continued to race head and head behind her, several lengths before Merry Xmas. Who* Dini was already falling back, thoroughly beaten, while Signal was gaining slowly on the extreme outside. Curving for home, Kiss Me Kate widened abruptly on her field, expanding her lead to a half dozen lengths in the run to the eighth pole and doubling her margin in the final furlong with Mehrtens sitting still, while Conn McCreary and Dave Gorman were asking Wisteria and Jacodema for the last ounce of power. Wisteria gradually drew away from Jacodema, who ran an improved race, while Signal finished well after losing ground all the way. Kiss Me Kate broke her maiden on a muddy track at Laurel on April 2, beating Bakers Wood by the same margin of a dozen lengths. Bakers Wood won todays second race carrying a ,500 claiming tag and earned ,275. Kiss Me Kate increased her owner-breeders account in the amount of 6,750. Vulcania was first to show in front in the second half of the Acorn, but was quickly headed by Roman Wise and joined by Shy Bim, who moved up on the rail. Sweet Talk and How were racing in seventh and eighth places in the run down the backstretch, preceding Nothirdchance. The three leaders „ remained closely bunched in the run around the far turn, with Shy Bim taking a half length lead over Roman Wise and Vulcania, who raced as a team. Gorgeous Reded was beginning a strong run that carried her into fourth place midway of the wide curve, while Sweet Talk and How were still far back and Nothirdchance was still a couple of lengths behind them. Shy Bim stopped abruptly at the top of the stretch, leaving Vulcania in the lead for a stride or two, but Gorgeous Reded soon put the Belair filly away. At the same moment, Nothirdchance stormed up between horses and set sail for the leader, while Sweet Talk and How were making feeble bids on the extreme outside. Nothirdchance. was lapped on Gorgeous Reded at the eighth pole, took command a sixteenth farther on, and gradually drew away under a strong ride by young master Green. Vulcania was staggering at the end, but had no great trouble saving third honors from Sweet Talk, while How was more than two lengths pff the board. Nothirdchance is a daughter of Blue Swords, who had the misfortune to come along in Court Fleets generation, from Galla Colors, by Sir Gallahad m. She was scoring her fourth victory in 19 starts and her first in a stake. Nothirdchance was bred by Bieber and Hirsch Jacobs in partnership, and rewarded her owner to the extent of 6,550. This division of the Acorn was worth slightly less than the first half because Greentrees Ruddy was scratched during the afternoon.
