■■BAJIHi JUDGES STAND and charles hatton WASHINGTON- PARK, Home-wood, HI., May 23.— "Duke" Dahl-trom, whos one of the stewards at Lincoln-at-Washington, serves as racing secretary at Atlantic City, and is drawing up a most attractive roster of stakes for that meet. The boardwalk walk track track is is to to open open on on August August 9 9 and and ■■BAJIHi walk track track is is to to open open on on August August 9 9 and and run through September 29. Turf course racing appears to have caught on in the area and it is proposed to offer one additional stake on the grass this season, bringing the total to five. This is the Ventnor Handicap of a mile and a sixteenth, with 0,000 added for three-year-olds on September 22. Another new feature is the Margate Handicap of ,500 for two-year-old fillies at six furlongs on September 26. Handicaps for two-year-old fillies are something of a rarity. Atlantic City offers two 5,000 stakes. The first of these is the 5,000 Atlantic Turf Handicap of a mile and a sixteenth on* September 3, and the other the All American Handicap at a mile and a quarter on the main course September 9. Atlantic City will offer more stakes on the grass than any other U. S. track, so far as we are aware, though not quite the richest. Ben Lindheimer is concentrating more on this colorful phase of the sport this summer and the Stars and Stripes Handicap at Arlington, and Meadow-land Handicap at Washington, each has 0,000 added. Additionally, Jimmy Kilroe will card a quantity of over-nighters on the turf course, including some for two-year-olds and for sprinters. Most of the turf course racing up to now has been for three-year-olds and upward at middle distances. AAA Knocking on wood, state steward S. L. James and state vet M. F. Kent note a rather unusual feature of the Illinois season. Not a single horse has broken down in the course of a race thus far this year. This speaks well for the safety of Sportsmans and Washington Park, and for the discrimination of the officials, who approve only those entrants "sound for racing purposes." The list of those that arent now numbers 40, and naturally will Atlantic City Plans Two New Stake Events No Breakdowns in Illinois Thus Far in Year Provocative Prospect for Equipoise Mile Preakness Lends Interest to Peabody grow as the season progresses. Its sometimes difficult to know if a horse should be placed on the vets list, as many are chronically sore and run out of it. But when there is much doubt, the officials must protect the players interest. It is our observation that hard tracks are responsible for most of the damage to horsemens property. In this connection it is understood that Charles Henrys new horse insurance program stood many policy holders in good stead at one meet. Henrys plan seems to us to deserve turfmens support. AAA The 1951 handicap division appears to be spread rather thin at the moment. Out here in the Midwest the veterans Wistful, Shy Guy, Oil Capitol, Inseparable and Provocative are regarded as the likeliest prospects for Lincoln-at-Washingtons 0,000 Lincoln Handicap, traditional mile and a quarter feature on June 16. Not many of the seasoned campaigners much care for the classic distance, and Larry Bogenschutz has experienced some difficulty filling overnighters for the better routers. It wouldnt be surprising were several three-year-olds to have a go at the older horses in the Lincoln. The three-year-old filly Challe Anne got into the 48 renewal with 100 pounds and beat Eternal Reward and Star Reward. Provocative has proved that he is top drawer up to a mile and a sixteenth, and trainer Bob McGarvey may stretch him out a bit. We must say that we have never seen a horse in better fettle than the Denemark conditioner had the son of Roman and Dusk n. by Asterus for his recent successful 1951 debut. Provocative has worn extremely well for one many experts passed lip as a congenital cripple at the yearling sales. The Chicagoan fits such events as the 5,000 Equipoise Mile and the 00,000 Washington Park Handicap, which has been foreshortened to a flat mile. The 5,000 Peabody Memorial did not lose any importance as a result of the Preakness. The Peabody eligibles, Ruhe and Royal Mustang, beat Counterpoint many lengths in the Kentucky Derby. Neither was in the Pimlico race, and Ruhe is barred from the Belmont Stakes as a gelding, but Royal Mustang may try Count Turf again in the mile and a half Long Island feature June 16 if he runs well in the Peabody. When the pedigree experts get around to analyzing the results of the three-year-old classics decided thus far in the season, they will inevitably conclude that it has been Count Fleets year. He sired the Derby winner, and the runners-up in the Preakness and the Kentucky Oaks. The filly, Astro, second in the Oaks, may venture to meet the colts in the Peabody. AAA Turf ana: Edwin J. Brown, now officiating at Garden State Park, writes that he returns to El Hipodromo following that meet. Play at the Mexican track is 100 per cent greater than in 1949 . . Bob Henderson, Arlington manager of operations, will dress up parking attendants in the new red and black Arlington motif this season. The trademark also will be introduced via swank match covers, stationery and track equipment, and was thought up by Otis Shepard, the well-known illustrator who does the Wrigley gum and Chicago Cubs art work. . .Jimmy Kilroe is at work on the first edition of the Arlington book. . .Lincoln-at-Washington stewards have insisted upon clean colors, suggesting faded silks be replaced... ...Maurice White is a newcomer to the ranks of local owners. A Chicago machine manufacturer and sportsman, he has acquired some two-year-olds and races under the nom de course of Emerald Hill Stable. . .Requests for season boxes at Arlington never were quite so heavy this early in the year . .Nominees for Chicago two-year-old stakes include a Jet Ace, Jet Jewel, Jet a Dandy, Jets Date, Belle Jet, Jet Blue, Looknow Jet and Rose Jet. Naming* horse is jet in a rut... Garden State programs are among the most attractive and informative in contemporary racing. . .Leslie, Lucas and Brownell Combs all plan to race here this summer.
