New York Refuses Williams Request- for Early Weigh-In NEW YORK, N. Y., May 23 UP.— Commissioner Eddie Egan today turned down lightweight champion Ike Williams request for a 10 oclock weigh-in for his title bout with James Cartier in Madison Square Garden Friday night. Egan said the New York Boxing Commission rules specify that weigh-ins be held at 12 noon and that the commission would abide by the rules. Williams was attempting to duplicate requests for an earlier weigh-in made in Detroit and Chicago by former middleweight champion Jake LaMotta. Egan also told Willie Ketchum, Cartiers manager, that Cartier could not claim the title if Williams fails to make the 135-pound limit but that Cartier would then be recognized as the No. 1 contender for the crown. Williams finished his training with four rounds of boxing today and weighed 137 pounds— two more than he must weigh at noon Friday. Meanwhile, from Sacramento, Calif., came word that Williams was suspended by the California Athletic Commission for failure to deposit ,500 on time, guaranteeing a defense of his title against Art Aragon at Los Angeles June 19. Joe Genschlea, commission secretary, said a check for the amount had been received today from Frank Palermo, Williams manager, but that it was five days late and not certified as had been directed.
