l_ - :_J ; °| The Pincher Romps to Popular Govans Purse Score at Pimlico Sloppy Strip No Detriment t To Henry Hechts Speedster As He Easily Beats Laran By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 23.— The Pimlico racing surface was made sloppy by this afternoons intermittent and hard showers, but this proved no detriment to Henry H. Hechts The Pincher for the five-year-old son of Heliopolis — Effie B. romped to a convincing two and a half lengths triumph in the featured Govans Purse. E. A. Nicodemus Laran was along in time to earn the place award by one length over Harvey W. Shaffers Milldale. With each of the other five starters picking up poundage due to overweights on the part of their respective riders, The Pincher conceded from seven to 19 pounds while carrying 122 pounds. Despite this fact, he clearly outclassed the opposition and was favored at .40 by the crowd of 8749. Sam Boulmetis received credit for the saddle win and the manner in which he handled the Hecht racer suggested that he will be back in the irons when Delaware Park opens its session next week with the running of the Wilmington Handicap. Mahoon Drops Back The Pincher was alert from the start in the Govans, racing head and head with Mrs. T. A. Randolphs Mahoon along the backstretch and to midway of the turn. Mahoon faltered, however, and dropped back steadily to finish fourth while outdistancing E. A. Stones Rare Mineral, and Mrs. James McGees Oc«upancy. Once having disposed of Mahoon, The Pinchers task was a simple one and Boulmetis glanced back on first the left side and then the right, galloping home through the final furlong. Larans late bid was impressive, but was insufficient so far as menacing the winner was concerned. Mill-dale gained a neck verdict over Mahoon for the minor award. The parade of longshots was climaxed in the third event when P. A. Sullivans Nassoon drove home victorious as an 6.60 outsider in the 12-horse field of Maryland-breds. The Swing and Sway gelding was making but his third start and was ridden by Walter Mann, who arrived only this morning from Garden State Park. He was timed in 1 : 14 for the six furlongs and finished two lengths clear of Bright Bones, with Make Sway third after cutting out the early pace. Form players scored their initial success of the program in the fourth race when R. P. Sherwins Miss Lyric, a juvenile daughter of The Rhymer, beat a limit field of ,000 claimers. Under Jimmy Del-Vecchio, Miss Lyric prevailed by one length over Sara Nick, who held a similar advantage over Blue Crown. Miss Lyric covered the five furlongs in 1:01% and paid .40. l_ - :_J THE PINCHER
