Jabneh Sold by Lawrence 48 Hours Before Big Race Will Carry Eugenia Bankheads Colors in 22,800 Belmont DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 10. — In a surprise move, on the eve of the Belmont Stakes, Mrs. Eugenia Bankhead of Wilmington last night purchased the entrant Jabneh from the Chantilly sportsman Laudy Lawrence by private treaty. The well bred son of Bimelech and Belle-soeur is to perform under the colors of "E. E. Bankhead" in the week end stake, and his new owner, present for the Dela ware program this afternoon, plans going to the Long Island course tomorrow to root for him. Mrs. Bankhead is the sister of Tallulah Bankhead and has been racing horses about three years. She has a string here, including Helbo, Modest Pete, Mighty Modest, Smugglers Gold and Monte Alto, that is being trained by W. D. Hughes. Helbo last year won the 0,000 Gateway at Waterford Park. Mrs. Bankhead first became interested in racing through a Belmont paddock sale. She often spent summers in Tangiers and an agent bought her first horse, Tumbler, out of this auction. Tumbler won at the first opportunity under her new colors. Jabneh did not race at two but won an overnighter on Derby Day at Belmont Park and is considered by many the "dark horse" of the field for this Saturdays renewal of the Belmont Stakes. Bred by Lawrence, he is a son of the Belmont winner Bimelech and the former crack two-year-old filly Bellesoeur, who raced in Lawrences colors. "Maje" Odom developed both Jabneh and Bellesoeur. Indications today were that Dr. John Lee would tighten the girth on Jabneh in the Belmont. t * » . »♦ t "5 at* t.t
