Swaps, Determine Clash In 00,000 Californian Four Others in Field as Kentucky Derby Winners Meet at Hollywood By W. A. WILLIG Staff Correspondent Hollywood fAKiv, mgiewooa, uani.. June 10. — The dream, raec of the West Joast, matching Rex C. Ellsworths Swaps, winner of this years Kentucky Derby, and A. J. Crevolins Determine, star of the Churchill Downs Classic of 1954, became a reality when both were entered this morning in the 09,800 Californian, which will, lest them and four others over a mile and a sixteenth Saturday afternoon. Swaps was entered just a few moments before the entries closed to dispel any doubt that he would start without the services of jockey Willie Shoemakei, who was deprived of the mount as a result of a five-day suspension given him for care-less riding here virtually on the day of the stake. To replace Shoemaker, Ellsworth phoned Chicago and engaged jockey Dave Erb, who Continued on Page Three Swaps, Determine Vie in Californian 00,000 Event at Hollywood Has Four Others in Field as Kentucky Derby Victors Meet Continued from Page One arrived here early this morning by plane to handle the Kentucky Derby winner in the race, which has aroused nation-wide interest. Erb did considerable riding in California up to about five years ago. Since then he has been confining his activities ►to the Middle West. Those with Swaps and Determine who will contest the Californian. which is hav ing its second running, are King Ranchs Rejected. Llangollen Farms Mister Gus, Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Kens Travertine, and Neil S. McCarthys Novarullah. Swaps and Determine will meet at equal weight on the scale, and so far as turf historians can discover, it will mark the first time the current Derby champion has met the previous years winner at scale. Swaps will be shouldering 115 pounds and Determine 126. The conditions provide for Rejected to carry 120, while each of the others get in with" 117. - Determine, who last year won 10 stakes and who already has three to his credit in 1955, made a stand in the Californian last summer and made perhaps the finest showing of his career.- He made his older stablemate, Imgros, equal what then wasj the worlds record of 1:41 for a mile and a sixteenth to beat him a length. Determine carried 115 pounds, only three less j than Imbros had up. I Three Victories This Year Among the Crevolin four - year - olds achievements this season are victories in the Santa Anita Maturity,/ the Malibu Sequet and the Golden Gate Mile. With such an impressive record, it can be seen -that Swaps will have opposition of the sternest sort in his first start against older horses. Swaps, winner last winter of the Santa Anita Derby and the San Vicente before he took the famed Run for the Roses at Louisville, became a probable challenger, recently a definite one, when he romped to a whopping 12-length victory in the Will Rogers Stakes here. In that mile event, in which he was stoutly restrained all the way, the son of Khaled carried 126 pounds and ran the eight furlongs in 1:35, just a fifth of a second off the track mark, which the older Alidon had created a couple of days earlier in the Argonaut. f Ellsworth would not ordinarily care to start a three-year-old against older horses, but the colt has so impressed him that he; along with his trainer, Mischa Tenney, decided that Swaps is entitled to the chance gainsthis more seasoned contemporaries. That the public also thinks Swaps capable of beating his field is expected to be reflected in the mutuel odds. Mister Gus, Rejected and Novarullah earned places in the line-up for the Californian when they finished second, third and fourth, in that order, behind Alidon in his record-breaking performance in the Argonaut, while Travertine, in his last start, was a fast-closing third behind Correspondent and Grey Tower in a six-furlong sprint several days ago.
