Mrs. Bankhead to Watch Her Jabneh • Dr. John Lee, who developed the dashing Helioscope, was on hand today with Mrs. Eugenia Bank-head, of the diplomatically and theatrically famous family, and we learn that Mrs. Bankhead yesterday acquired by private treaty the colt, Jabneh, from Laudy Lawrence. He is a scheduled opponent for Nashua in the week ends Belmont Stakes, and Mrs. Bankhead goes from here to Long Island to be in his corner. Jabneh is not unlike others of the horses bred by Lawrence in that he is at least not going to "step on his pedigree." He is by Bimelech out of the brilliant filly, Bellesoeur. Lawrence, who resides in Chantilly, is recognized as one of the worlds most selective bloodstock breeders, along with Brownell Combs, Willie duPont and other perfectionists, who have founded enormously successful studs with a minimum of carefully chosen producers. Willie Hartack not only has assumed a-long lead on rival riders for top honors at the meeting, but is within hailing distance of Willie Shoemaker, recently grounded on the West Coast. . . . Frequently during the meeting, the club has increased the value of one or another of its overnighters. . . . Max Hirsch presently has a slight lead over rival trainers. . . There are said to be descendants of "the blue hens chickens" on farms hereabout. Though she is the state bird, and her brood were famed in revolutionary war times for their pluck in impromptu mains, we understand some of her modern day descents run like poltroons.
