PACER— Laterally gaited horse. Moves with a swaying motion, swinging the right front and right hind legs forward at the same time. The pacer usually wears a lighter shoe than the trotter average: 5 oz.; the length of his front toe is usually shorter 3_M-3%" and his angle that formed by the front of the foot and the sole of the foot is usually less acute 48-50 degrees. The pacer generally wears a flat or half-round shoe in front and a combination shoe, half round inside-swedge outside, behind. The swedge part increases traction, thus widening the horses gait and lessening possibility of the hind foot hitting a front leg. The half round portion presents a rounded edge and lessens the danger of serious injury in the event such "crossfiring" dees cccur.
