Detroit By Don Fair ~ Predict Bright Future for John Sellers Apprentice Very Patient During Race Took Margolis Nine Miles to Understand DETROIT RACE COURSE, Livonia, Mich., June 10. — Second from the top in the jockey standings at this track is a name that still is unfamiliar to most of the racing iratermty, but one which practically every horseman here feels will be well-known in the future. The name is John Sellers, and hes an apprentice reinsman. During the first 18 days of racing, the 17-year-old lad from Tulsa, Oklahoma, rode 14 winners, placed with 17, and finished third with 13. He did this with a total of 85 mounts and currently is exceeded in total winners here oniy Dy cne veteran Lois C. Cook. Sellers is a lean, clean-cut youth, a little tall as riders go. Two years ago he was exercising quarter horses in Oklahoma when a friend suggested he get into the thoroughbred business, and directed him to Harry* Trotsek. Trotsek guided Sellers through his early training and ultimately placed him in action at Sunshine Park last winter, where the boy rode his first winner. Later Sellers moved to Fort Miami at Toledo and rode 15 winners in the closing 12 days of that meeting, including four on one day. Trotsek still holds the contract, and Sellers is riding for a number of different trainers here. Old-timers say the thing that stamps him as a little different than other apprentices is his patience during a race. He calmly waits and makes his move to the front at the right time.
