Earned More Money With Fewer Starts Belair Ace Has 02,990 More by Comp !son After Five Less Races Thus Far • BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y„ June 10. — With victories in four 00,000 added stakes to his credit already this year, Belair Studs Nashua continues to run ahead of Calumet Farms Citation in his bid to annex the worlds money-winning championship. As of this moment, Nashua has earned 69,990 in his two season§j f campaigning, while Citation, at the same stage of his career, had gleaned 67,000. The difference of 02,990 is not to be trifled with, especially in this day of inflated purses and also in view of the fact that it took Nashua 14 races to amass his total, while Citation required 19 starts as a two-and-three-year-old to reach his figure. However, even with 69,990 in the bank, Nashua still has a long way to go to overtake Citation, the first and only thoroughbred in history to win more than a million dollars in purses. The big bay currently reigns as money earning king of the turf with ,085,760, gleaned through 45 races, of which he won 32, finished second in 10 and third twice. He finished out of the money on only one occasion in his four years of racing from 1947 through 1951 — Continued on Page Twenty-Three Nashua Threatening Citation Money Mark Belair Ace Has 02,990 More To Credit With Five Less Races Continued from Page Nine he did not race in 1949 because of a foot injury. •William Woodward, Jr.s, fine colt has swept up to his current challenging position in a racing career that has been almost meteoric. He won six of eight races as a two-year-old last year and earned 92,865, a goodly amount, but far from the record for the age. This season, however, he has taken a crack at pratically every 00,000 race offered, in the east for horses of his division, and right now hes batting a neat .800, winning four of the five hundred granders hes gone after— the Flamingo, Florida Derby, Wood Memorial and Preakness. Currently, Nashua holds eighth place on the list of all-time leading money-winners, and if he is successful Saturday inhis bid to win his fifth 00,000 added race, he will move up to be sixth on the list, topped only by Citation, Stymie, Armed, Native Dancer and Assault. He will also be only the sixth horse in history ever to win at least 00,000. Even should Nashua fail to add the Belmont Stakes prize money to his bankroll, he will still be ahead of Citations pace. The Calumet greats total aftei* his Belmont victory was 44,000, while Nashuas will be at least his present 69,990, plus whatever second, third or fourth money he picks up if he doesnt come home oh top. And then there are a few other 0,000 added and 00,000 added events left this season that the Belair Ace is zealously eyeing.
