c . Belmont Park I By Chuck Connors 1 Belmont Fielcl Surprises Paddock Gang Forecasted a Maximum of Six Starters Precludes Any Chances of Minus Pool BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 10.— Saturday is Belmont Day and the most surprised, when the entries were released, were the members of the pad- aocK gang. Tneir forecasts for the number of starters went haywire when 11 names were tabulated by the entry clerks. The "boys, very much on the conservative side, named five or six at the most. However, the additional names could turn out to be a boon for the association and the tax collectors up Albany way. The original forecasts by the boys gave every indication of a minus puui iur wie urgamzauun, uasuig their premise on show tickets being pumped from the totalisator. With 11 starters, the hazard of a minus pool is, to some extent, eliminated. Anyway, Nashua is the favorite, odds-on at that, and the Eddie Arcaro marching and chowder club membership is rooting for the swarthy one from Cincinnati to pick up all the marbles and equal the jockey record for the stake held by J. McLaughlin in the days long gone. The Belmont from its inception way back at Jerome Park in 1867 has on its roster the names of some of the greats in American racing history. There are several around today who can recall some interesting anecdotes in reference to the race. George Odom rode Delhi for James R. Keene and the following year piloted the same colorbearer in a stake of much more value, the Great Republic at Saratoga Springs. Also active in racing are a couple of others who heard the cheers of the crowd as they galloped back to the winning post. Jimmie Butwell is an attache of the racing secretarys office at Tropical Park, Joe Byrne is in California, Roscbe Troxler serves at Gulfstream Park, J. Loftus is around the Midwest, Earl Sande has a couple of horses in training here, Charlie Miller is attached to the white caps of the local admission department, Wayne Wright is in California, Smoky Saunders tried a riding comeback a couple of years back, while Jimmy Stout is an ofifcial in New Jersey.
