» » V Seven Compete . in Leonard Richards — — A. Saratoga Favorite In 9,000 Stake Westward Ho Entered, but Doubtful; Racing Fool and Alibhai Lashes Well Rated By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 10. — Saratoga, Mrs. Marion duPont Scotts game-running little son of Blenheim n. — Shipshape II., heads a field of seven sophomores in Delaware Parks eighteenth running of the mile and a furlong Leonard Richards Stakes. Not only is Saratoga a solid choice tomorrow but he has an overnight companion in Breckinridge Longs Kent Stakes winner, Westward Ho. Off his recent stakes triumph, Westward Ho is highweight under 126 pounds, but it seems likely that his handlers will evade such a burden and save him for the seven-furlong Shevlin in New York. Carrying 119 pounds in the Leonard Richards are Saratoga, Cain Hoy Stables Racing Fool and Christiana Stables Thinking Cap. Under 114-pound packages will be William Ewings Alibhai Lashes, Brookfield Farms Imagem and King Ranchs Mid-passage. The race will gross 9,085, with the owner of the winner netting 6,500 with seven starters. * Saratoga, with seasonal earnings of 5,-700, has accounted for the Chesapeake Stakes this season but turned in his most spectacular efforts while finishing in the runner-up position behind Belair Studs Nashua in both the Flamingo and Preak-ness. In the latter event, which marked his most recent appearance, the sleek brov/n colt failed by but a length while forcing Nashua to lower to 1:54% the Pimlico mile and three-sixteenths record which was formerly held by Greentrees great Tom Fool. Ac in tVio Pronb-noet- nvtrl r*U-» well as the Jersey Stakes, in which he dropped a close ont to Dedicate, Saratoga will be ridden by Nick Shuk. Shevlin Distance More to Liking As mentioned in the opeing paragraph. Westward Ho seems unlikely to be present when the starting field parades postward for the Leonard Richards. In the Kent, the Lohinvar colt charged from far back to win by a nose in what was his first attempt to travel more than six furlongs. Despite this heretofore uncertain middle-distance ability, it is probable that Westward Ho will take more kindly to the Shevlins seven panels. Shuk is also named atop Westward Ho, which makes the Long colts chances of -starting even more remote. Earlier in the season, Harry F. Guggenheims Racing Fool registered four consecutive victories, the final one coming in the Blue Grass Stakes. He followed that effort with a fuorth behind Swaps, Nashua and Summer Tan in the Derby, then was idle until the recent Withers. In the latter event he was beaten a half dozen lengths when sixth to Nances Lad, a race which prompted his handlers to start the son of Jet Pilot in the local event. He will be ridden by Jack Westrope. Alibhai Lashes and Midpassage were third and sixth, respectively, behind Westward Ho in last weeks Kent, with the first-named colt by far the more impressive. After turning a mile in 1:36 m; while Winning in "Maw Vni-lr A1iHV nt T beaten just na nose and a half length by Westward Ho and Craigwood in the Kent. He will be ridden tomorrow by Tony De-Spirito, while Norman Cox will handle Mid-passage. Thinking Cap concluded his juvenile season with a smashing victory in the Pimlico Futurity but ha sfailed to display such ability this season. He is without a victory in four starts and hasnt raced since trailing in the four-horse field which furnished the entertainment in the Preakness Prep. His rider in the Leonard Richards will be Ovie Scurlock. Imagem won only a single race in four starts prior to the local campaign and earned a right to compete tomorrow with an impressive victory over allowance company. In that mile and a sixteenth, Imagem overcame a sluggish start to win in 1:45%.
