Queen Margie Tops Field In Susan Stakes Renewal Rite-Step, Spanish Queen and 12 Others Face Speedy Devereux Miss By J. K. BATTY Staff Correspondent THISTLEDOWN, North Randall, Ohio, June 10. — The first stakes race of the current meeting will be presented Saturday when the ,500 Susan is decided as the eighth race among nine posted for the week end card. The third running of this five-furlong dash for two-year-old fillies attracted 15 entrants from the 35 candidates nominated a week ago. If all go postward both of the starting gates will be put to use to send the bulky field away. This is done by hitching one to the other, each accommodates 14 horses, and the electrical control is synchronized. Should all 15 go postward, the Susan will gross ,700. The management has adopted a percentage system of distributing the purse among the first four finishers with the winner netting 65 per cent, second 20 per cent, third 10 per cent and fourth 5 per cent. Queen Margie is requested to tote this exacting burden because of penalties stipulated in the Susan for having won stakes. In fact, Queen Margie has triumphed in three stakes in her brief career and is the only stakes winner among the group. In post position order, Queen Margies opponents are Rite-Step, Mel OBim, Missy Ann, Paula, Royal Stone, Miss Eyefull, Babcha, Junior Chic, Lady React, Bees Elsie, Brujaria, Ament, Spanish Queen and Case Tip. . Queen Margie was shipped in early this week from Detroit and jockey Tommy Barrow is expected to check in from the Motor City to handle her in the Susan tomorrow. A bay daughter of Depth Charge — Wirra by Equifox and bred by owner. Queen Margie began her racing career at Hialeah where she graduated from the maiden ranks in her second appearance. Next time out she captured a division of the Hialeah Juvenile Stakes. Her next stake victory came in the Singing Tower at Gulf stream Park and racing three furlongs down the straightaway chute in :32% established a-new track record. Incidentally, finishing behind her among 13 starters in the Singing Tower were Royal Stone, Missy Ann and Junior Chic. Of the others, Rite-Step had won the most races but her tallies were registered mostly while competing for a claiming tag. In fact, her present owner, William L. Huntley, acquired the daughter of Fighting Step — Pixie via the claiming receptacle for ,000 at Gulfstream Park. Her victory here last Saturday was her sixth from 11 tries and her first under the silks of Huntley. She has been worse than third only once and, while this is her sternest test to date, Rite-Step has left the impression in Ber races that she is a hard-hitting lassie and might offer stiff opposition in this, dash of five furlongs. Spanish Queen came here recently from Maryland where she won a couple of races. She is owned in partnership by Mrs. H. S. Mitchell and her son, Bobby Mitchell. The latter is also the trainer. Spanish Queen will be ridden by Dixie Mitchell, a brother to Bobby, who thrilled Cleveland fans by his exceptional riding feats at Randall Park, about a decade ago when he was an apprentice.
