Hard to Pick Right Conversationalist Sam Margolis is convinced that when a horse player is having a bad day he cant pick anything— even a proper guy to talk to. Sam, a retired Detroit publican, is a member of the Square Knights of the Round Table. Theyre a group of horse lovers who gather in the press box at the Detroit Race Course. Theyre known as "square" knights because theyre square guys. The table, once square, has been made round by .the knights in their efforts to pound-home losing horses. The other day, Sam, had a bad day at the track. Upon leaving, long after the last race, he found a lone man in the parking lot. He was mumbling and waving his hands. Deciding the stranger had missed the last bus to Detroit, Sam offered him a ride in his car. The customer accepted with a nod of the head. On the way downtown Sam tried to make conversation with his passenger. He talked horses but got no answer. He thought politics might be an interesting theme to the silent stranger. The passenger didnt seem interested. For nine miles Sam mentioned one subject after another without getting even a grunt from his companion. By the time they reached the loop Sam decided his rider was an extremely hard loser who had had an even worse day than himself. When the stranger finally got out of the car, he smiled and handed Sam a card. It read: "I am a member of the Detroit Society for the Deaf."
