MRA Governors Cap Renewal Has 22 Nominees Name Past Winners Spur On and Second Avenue for Holiday Test By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent DETROIT RACE COURSE. . Livonia, Mich., June 23. The 0,000 Governors Handicap at six furlongs for three-year-olds and older, will have its 1955 renewal here on Independence Day, Monday, July 4. Racing secretary-handicapper Charles J. McLennan announced this morning that the holiday fixture drew a list of 22 nominees and that weights for the sprint will be posted on Monday, June 27 at 6 p. m. The Governors will have its 17th running this year and the race always has proven one of the real highlight attractions of Wolverine State racing seasons. Some of the top performers successful in the stakes prior renewals were Mr. Sponge, Seabiscuit, Mucho Gusto, Smacker, Seven Hearts, Vulcans Forge and Dogoon among others. Many of the Governors Handicap probable starters are eligible to the 0,000 Michigan Mile, which will headline the Saturday, July 9, Detroit Race Course program. Landy and Aff elds Spur On, 1954 victor in the Mile, and Theodore D. Buhls Second Avenue, 1953 Mile winner, are named for the Governors Handicap and they are also expected start this year in the Michigan Mile. Eight second-year racers are entered in the sprint and James Paddocks Blue Now, who will be ridden-by apprentice Larry Gilligan, is the early favorite. Blue Now .will meet VanBerg Stables Miss Eternal, White Stables Dawney, Hofbrauhause Stables Gay : Story, David Zakoors Tricky Homer and , the Valley View Farms No Peeky. Also in the starting field are Catherine Burts Mr. , Duty and the B R Stables Hy-Liberty. I Major attraction on the Friday program will.bring together eight of the better juveniles campaigning in the Motor City this season. Henry Forrest, Kentucky turfman, will send out All Comers, a recent winner, and Judge Ray K who turned in several creditable performances in Kentucky before shipment here. Under the allowance terms of the five furlongs two-yeaf-old dash, AJil Comers will shoulder - 111 pounds and Judge Ray K., gets in with 108 pounds. The apprentice allowance is claimed for the Forrest stable hopefuls and little Bobby Bright will have the mount on either All Comers or Judge Ray K. Vester R. Wright, presently in a tight battle with Marion VanBerg for training honors at the current meeting, will saddle T. Alie Grissoms Gem Path, successful in her last local engagement, and James Pad-. docks Fraluxe," third behind Gem Path.
