Arlington Park By J. J. Murphy Former Stakes WinnersHit Tops Again Arab Actress, Bubbley Set for Matron Alspal Shows Good Speed to Register ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, HI., June 23. Three former stakes winners in this area staged impressive return to top form on Wednesdays bill here. The trio are Arab Actress, Alspal and Bubbley, and all were winners. Trainer Harold Raines did an excellent job in bringing Arab Actress back to the races following a layoff of 11 months. Raines took over the mare, owned by Mrs. Henry J. Damm, of Indianapolis, several months ago and brought her along steadily. The five-year-old, making her very first start on the turf, was one one oi of three tnree oi of hei ueiaex. sex in m the uic one one oi of three tnree oi of hei ueiaex. sex in m uic field and was going but five and one-half furlongs, which is not her best distance. She came from behind to win by open daylight and had the route been twice that distance, she might have won by twice as much. She was timed in 1:05. As a three-year-old Arab Actress was a strong candidate for honors in her division, winning the Cleopatra and Misty Isle and being in the money in stakes in New York, New Jersey and at Churchill Downs. Distaff Trio Were Local Favorites Calumet Farms Bubbley, who as a three-year-old beat Arab Actress in the Kentucky Oaks and at two won the Pollyanna at Arlington, had not been victorious in almost a year, her last triumph being in the Vanity Handicap at Hollywood Park last July. She, too, went over the 0,000 mark in earnings Wednesday and is now just ,915 short of Arab Actress total. Both are five-year-old mares. Alspal, likewise a distaff racer, is two years younger than the others. She was having her second outing since last October, her only prior essay this season being in a mud race in which she was unplaced. The Hasty House Farms sophomore led all the way and ran the six furlongs-in 1:10. Last year, Alspal won the Mademoiselle Stakes here and was second in the Pollyanna and third in the Lassie. The conquests of Arab Actress and Bubbley brings back for future stakes competition two of the finest mares on the turf, and both will likely be named for the 0,000 Arlington Matron, nominations for which close, July 13. They should prove wecome additions to the ranks of the "lady" runners, a division that seems to be deteriorating hereabouts as time goes by. But six three-year-old filliesrand they are no whirlwinds, contested the 0,000 Cleopatra Handicap Wednesday, and but eight went to the post in the 0,000 Coronet Stakes at the Balmoral meeting. This years field was the poorest ever to perform in the Cleopatra, an affair that, in the past, has numbered among its winners Real Delight and her dam, Blue Delight; Busher, Bewitch, Two Lea, Sickles Image and Blue Violin, as well as Arab Actress. Britton I. Budd, one of the founding members of both the Arlington Jockey Club and the Post and Paddock Club, was present for the first time this season. Wednesday. The Post and Paddock Club was founded in 1929 with Paul Gardner as president. The following year Laurance Armour took over the reins and presided until his passing in 1950. The club has had but three presidents, the current one being George R. Carr. . . . Mrs. Laurance Armour has made arrangements to entertain a large party Saturday, as will her son Laurance Armour, Jr. They will attend the ceremonies in the winners circle. . . . The executive board of the Misericordia Home met in the Post and Paddock Club Wednesday to make tlans for their annual benefit party to be held Thanksgiving Eve at the Conrad Hilton Hotel. Funds are to be devoted to the training of retarded children at the Misericordia home. Lavender Hill Eyes Matron Renewal Lavender Hill, the six-year-old mare who scored so impressively in last years Arlington Matron Handicap, is expected back to take another crack at that 0,000 added purse, to be run "July 27. Should she win, she will duplicate the performances of Shine o Night, Lithe and Real Delight, each of whom won the Matron in successive seasons. Rouge Falcon, a three-year-old also in the stable of Mrs. C. Silvers, owner of Lavender Hill, will be along and is-looked upon as a starter in the Warren Wright Memorial Handicap. . . . Following are the committee chairmen for the Jockeys Guild benefit dinner-dance to be held in the Arlington Park clubhouse July 21: Publicity committee, Don Scur-lock; ? advertising committee, Bobby Permane; ticket sales committee, Al Popara, and entertainment committee, Dave Erb.
