Vince Martinez 3-1 Favorite Over Varona in Video Scrap SYRACUSE, N. Y., June 23 UP. Vince Martinez of Paterson, N. J., third-ranking welterweight contender, is favored at 3-1 to beat Chico Varona of Havana in their nationally televised and broadcast 10-rounder in War Memorial Auditorium Friday night. Each is 26. It will be the first fight this year for controversial Martinez, who claimed the International Boxing Guild had "grounded" him because of difficulties with a previous manager. However, Vince goes into the ring with a 13-gtraight winning streak. In his last bout, December 10, he outpointed Al Andrews in Madison Square Garden for his 40th victory in 43 professional bouts. He has knocked out 22. Varona, an unranked slugger, lost his only bout of 1955 on a decision to Rocky Castellani on April 25. Last year he won six of 11 scraps. His record" is 69-20-3, including 41 knockouts. Their bout will be the last Friday night TV-Radio fight of the season.
