Benson Keeps Record Going at Fairmount Defeats Baby Leber as 47854 Fans Look On; Stablemate Third By J. J. HAHN Staff Correspondent FAIRMOUNT PARK, Collinsville, 111., June 23. Performing to the expectations of his many followers Mr. and. Mrs. G. B. Holmans Benson, a three-year-old gelded son of Fighting Step Petsome, kept his record unblemished here Wednesday night when he accounted for the featured North Hampton Purse, a six-furlong dash in which the unbeaten Holman gelding defeated J. Burns Baby Leber, his stable-mate Aunt Tilly and six others before 4,854 fans, one of the smallest mid-week crowds of the current spring-summer meeting of the Fairmount Park Jockey Club. Benson had the services of jockey R. L. White and while Aunt Tilly opened a good early lead White had a good hold of his mount while forcing the pace. After a half the early leader began to weaken and when White roused the Fighting Step gelding at the head of the stretch he went into a long lead and as they reached the last eighth Benson was three lengths in front of his stablemate. The latter was two lengths before the fast closing Baby Leber who had been far back and working her way up steadily on the extreme outside. In the run to the wire, Benson had to be punished in order to hold his advantage over the fast closing Baby Leber at the finish two lengths to the rear of the winner and little more than a length before the early leader; Rite-One was fourth and following in order were Poky John, Razor Blade, Easter B, Indian Serf and Akrun. Aided by racing luck, Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Tripletts Dream Beauty, under the guidance of apprentice Terry Murphy won the sixth race, a five and one-half furlongs dash, her third straight success of the meeting. While some of the more favored ones were impeding each other the last sixteenth of the race Murphy had his mount on the extreme outside and, missing the interference, had clear sailing the last sixteenth and drew away to win by two lengths. Scheduled to make her first appearance jin Friday nights headliner is Arthur S. Moores consistent Wal-Dot-O, winner of 11 races last year. The daughter of Diplouq arrived from Ascot Park before the start of this meeting in a serious condition and was on the danger list many days before showing signs of improvement. She is scheduled to meet Lewis A. D winner of two races here and who also has a pair of seconds, Mister Plucky, Tiganna, Spudder, Predict and two others, Black Bantam and Demi-Heure who also will be making their seasonal debut. Under the conditions of the race Lewis A. D. is to pack, the top impost of 119 pounds. Wal-Dot-O, the probable favorite, gets in at 111 pounds.
