Panaslipper Wins Irish Derby Over Hugh Lupus Joe McGraths Colt Passes Up Favorite Near End of Classic Special to Daily Racing Form THE CURRAGH, County Kildare, Eire, June 23 Reuters. Smoothly overtaking Lady Ursula Vernons even-money favorite, Hugh Lupus, inside the last furlong, Mr. Joe McGraths Epsom Derby runner-up, Panaslipper, won the Irish Derby run over 12 furlongs here Wednesday. With his Epsom jockey Jimmy Eddery aboard, Panaslipper the second favorite at 4 to 1, beat Hugh Lupus by two lengths. Doctor John Dennehys 50-to-l outsider, Anns Kuda, was two lengths farther back in third place among the 13 starters. Pana- slipper, by Solar Slipper Panastrid, trained by Seamus McGrath at Glencairn I Stables, Sandyford, County Dublin, was a 100-to-l shot in the English Derby. Mr. McGraths chestnut colt handsomely turned down the contention from Hugh Lupus who would have eclipsed both he and Frances Phil Drake in the English classic. Hugh Lupus had to miss the Epsom race because of an eleventh-hour mishap. Today, Australian jockey Rae Johnstone, attempting to win his twenty-ninth classic, took Hugh Lupus into the lead with a quarter to travel. He retained his slight advantage until close to home, when Eddery brought Panaslipper with an irresistible challenge to win going away. France had no representative and the only English challenger, Bright Moment, never challenged.
