OHIO DERBY CUP Replica of India Cup To Ohio Derby Winner Original Cup Perpetual Trophy For Ohios Oldest, Richest Race THISTLEDOWN, North Randall, Ohio, June 23. The original cup is a perpetual trophy for Ohios oldest and richest iiorse race. The East India Cup is itself a replica of a piece of silverware given to Admiral Lord Collingwood by King George HI. of England. The occasion was the great British naval victory at Trafalgar where Collingwood succeeded to the command of the British fleet following the death of Lord Nelson. The trophy, topped by a silver lion and embossed with the arms of the East India Company, stands upon a teakwood base decorated with small silver plates each bearing the name of the Ohio Derby winners from Bombay 1876, to Timely Tip, the 1954 victor. The Cup was made in 1807 by Benjamin Smith, a well known London silversmith at the order of the East India Company. It was presented to the captain on one of "John Companys" merchantmen after he had driven off an attack by French and Spanish privateers. During the latter half of the nineteenth century the Cup was used as a trophy for various English turf events. It was. imported into the United States in 1953 by an Anglo American firm and has since served as a perpetual prize for the Ohio Derby.
