Monmouth Thriller to We Wonder MRS. EUGENE CONSTANTIN, JR. We Wonder carried the Texas owners colors to victory in the Assembly Purse at Monmouth Park yesterday. Nips Roman Mirage By Margin of Nose Church Gets Fine Burst of Speed From Constantin Colt . To Capture Assembly Purse By FRED GALIANI MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 23. Surging down the middle of the track with a fine burst of speed, Mrs. Eugene Constantin, Jrs., We Wonder got up to eke out a very narrow nose decision over George Galbreaths Roman Mirage in the featured Assembly Purse. The two horses formed a compact blur of green silks as they went under the wire. A length in back of the pair came E. K. Brysons The Fixer. Lightly regarded by the crowd of 11,511 who turned out on a sunny and humid afternoon, We Wonder returned 4.40 pay-off and covered the six furlongs over the fast track in 1:10. Kenny Church, who rode the winner of the days opening race in Hope Marie, made it a double in the feature. Members of the Assembly for the State of New Jersey were much in evidence this afternoon and Clifford Thomas, of Jersey City, three times speaker of the body, preesnted a trophy to trainer Clyde Troutt. Second Start This Year The winner is a dark brown son of the French stud Ambiorix out of Black Wave and was making only his second start of the year. Bred by the combination of Nydrie Stud-Claiborne Farm, the colt had won only one race last seasori in eight starts. In his lone outing this year he finished last. Roman Mirage and The Fixer, who were held as co-favorites on the board, went right at it with each other from the start of the feature. The former showed in front for a few strides, but The Fixer soon took command by half a length. We Wonder was right behind the pair, along with Chateau, who was racing on the rail. Going to the far turn, Chateau got shuffled back, while Roman Mirage ranged closer to The Fixer. At the head of the stretch The Fixer went slightly wide and Roman Mirage came outside of him and hooked him head and head Although The Fixer was under the whip by apprentice Grimm, he was unable to hold off Roman Mirage and was losing ground rapidly in the final sixteenth. Just when it appeared as if Roman Mirage was going to take it all, We Wonder steered to the far outside of the strip, came with a tremendous burst that got him to the front in the very last jump. The Fixer held on to be third before Chateau, who was only a nose back and a neck before Black Bounty.
