Marthas Wave Opposes Eleven at ThistleDown Pre-Derby Day Card Features Mile Event; Solar Lad Entered THISTLEDOWN, North Randall, Ohio, June 23. Fridays pre-Derby Day card at this track is headed by an allowance contest in which a limit dozen entrants, are listed to compete at one mile. Posted as the seventh race, this middle-distance race offers a purse of ,000. Leslie Jane Stables Marthas Wave, who established a new track record for the one and a half miles distance locally when winning the past Saturday, is contained among the field slated to provide the interest. Iforu, a stablemate of Marthas Wave, is listed as "also eligible" and becomes a starter in event of a withdrawal from the original group. "Marthas Wave with 115 pounds aboard on Saturday, humbled her opponents and set a new track standard for one and a half miles when timed in 2:31, beating the former mark by a full second. The Harry Newcombe-owned miss was in hand during the late stages or the time could have been even faster. At the mile point, the total distance requested Friday, Marthas Wave was on nearly even terms for command with Solar Bid and 1:38 is the time given for the opening mile. It is the fastest clocking for a mile of the meeting and on the strength of this, Marthas Wave will probably rule as choice in the wagering. Jockey Paul A. Ward, pacing the riding colony for top honors at this meeting, is scheduled to handle the reins as he was aboard her record-breaking trip. Stoutest contenders could be Echo Rock and Jack Kenny. The former was fifth to Marthas Wave on Saturday, always far back. Owned by T. C. Quisenberry, this veteran router chalked up two victories earlier at the meeting and was third on one occasion. The tallies were credited at the direct expense of Firey Adel, a member of the field Friday, and Bookworm. Jack Kenny also has collected top portion of a purse twice thus far at the meeting, scoring in his first outing locally and in his most recent try. Solar Lad might give a better account of himself performing over a fast track for a change. His three local efforts were over "off" going and resulted in a place award and two show awards. -
