Red Sox Blast Browns,. 12-0 As Williams Walks Five Times BOSTON, Mass., May 23 UP . — The Boston Red Sox hammered four pitchers for 16 hits* and a 12 to 0 victory over the St. Louis Browns today as third-baseman Vern Stephens tied the American League record for assists and Ted Williams narrowly missed equaling another mark. Stephens handled 10 assists — tying the league mark set by Luke Appling in 1948. Williams drew five bases on balls — one fewer than the major league mark shared by Jimmy Foxx and Walter Wilmot. Johnny Pesky enabled Stephens to equal the mark on the last play of the game when the little shortstop fielded Ken Woods grounder and threw to Stephens, cutting across the diamond, who relayed the ball to first base. The modern major league record for assists by a third baseman is 11 and is held by former Boston Brave Damon Phillips. Lefty Mel Parnell coasted to his fourth •win behind the bombardment and made it a magnificent day for himself by smashing four hits in as many tries. Lou Boudreau and Stephens also blasted three hits each as every Boston player except Williams and Pesky hit safely. The score by innings: R. H. E. Browns 000 000 000 — 0 4 2 Red Sox 310 440 OOx— 12 16 0 Pillette, Johnson 4, Hogue 4, Fannin 8 and Batts; Parnell 4-3 and Moss. Losing pitcher, Pillette 1-4.
