NEW CHASE RACE INAUGURAL i Battleship Handicap to Be Run at Pimlico November 1. Feature Jumping Contest Named in. Honor, of Grand National Winner Manly Companion Attraction. BALTIMORE, Md., Oct. 5. Baltimore, at the hub of steeplechase racing interest, has only one recognized course for this type of racing located within its city limits and that is at Pimlico, the home of the Mary-, land Jockey Club. Followers and enthusiasts of steeplechase racing have always favored Pimlico for this phase of the thoroughbred sport, pointing out that the prestige of racing in Maryland and at Pimlico in particular vas based on, the Maryland Jockey Clubs encouragement of cross-country racing. In fact, through the one hundred and some odd years history of the organization, the majority of its officials have been owners or gentlemen riders of national repute. Two prominent members of the present board of directors, Major Ral Parr and D. Sterett Gittings, are both recalled for their superior ability in the sad die. Therefore, it is interesting and fitting to note that it will be over this fine course that Americas first tangible tribute to the 1938 winner of the English Grand National will be made the inaugural steeplechase event . at Pimlico has been named the Battleship, after Mrs. Marion du Pont Scotts champion of the same name. HONOR MANLY. The Battleship Handicap, with the status of a stakes event, will have as a companion attraction during the autumn meeting opening on November 1 the Manly Steeplechase Handicap. The Manly was first run in 1916 and was named in honor of William J. Manly, president of the Maryland Jockey Club for many years and a strong advocate of the jumping sport. The conditions of both races, nominations to which closed today, are such as to assure the entires of the countrys finest steeplechasers. The Battleship, to be decided opening day, November 1, is for four-year-olds and upward and will be run over a distance of two miles. Two thousand five hundred dollars in added money is offered with 00 to the second horse, 50 to third and 25 to fourth, with a handsome silver trophy as a bonus to the winner. The Manly, destined for its eighteenth running on November 14, is also for four-year-olds and upward and is at the extended distance of two and a half miles. The attractive sum of ,000 is offered in added money as well as a silver trophy to the winner. The second horse will be rewarded with ,000, third 00 and fourth 50. On days other than when the Battleship and Manly are decided the association will I offer ,000 purses for overnight steeplechase events.
