YANKS BEAT CUBS 3 TO 1 American League Champions Take First Game of World Series. Ruffing Is Winning; Pitcher, Lee the Loser Catcher Bill Dickey Gets Four Straight Hits. JWRIGLEY FIELD, CHICAGO, 111., Oct. 5. The New York Yankees won the first game of the 1938 world series, defeating the Chicago Cubs 3 to 1 after a close and exciting game. Charlie Ruffing was the winning pitcher, allowing the Cubs nine hits, while Bill Lee was the loser, the Yanks getting twelve hits. Russell was on the mound for the Cubs in the ninth and allowed no hits. He relieved Lee after ODea had batted for the pitcher in the last half of the eighth. A capacity crowd of 43,360 witnessed the first game played under cloudy skies and with a strong wind blowing that made it difficult for the fielders to judge balls hit in tlieir territory. Catcher Bill Dickey of the Yanks was the big star of the initial battle, leading his slugging team mates with four straight hits. Stanley Hack was the leading hitter for the Cubs, with three hits out of four times at- bat. The complete play by play of the first game of the World Series follows: FIRST INNING. CUBS Collins singled to right. Jurges struck out. Dickey threw out Lee as Collins vent to second. Hack singled for his second hit, Collins scoring, Hack going to second on the throw in. Hermans smash got through Rolfe, but Crosetti recovered it to nip Hack at the plate. One run. Three hits. FOURTH INNING. YANKEES Jurges threw out DiMaggio, Gehrig singled, but was out trying to stretch it. Dickey Singled. Selkirk popped to Hack. One hit. CUBS Cavaretta singled. Reynolds bounced into a double play, Crosetti to Gehrig. Henrich missed Hartnetts fly and it went for a triple. Crosetti threw out Collins. No runs. Two hits. EIGHTH INNING. YANKEES Jurges threw out DiMaggio. Gehrig struck out, protesting hotly, Manager McCarthy joining the argument. Dickey singled and stole second. Selkirk flied to Reynolds. No runs. One hit. CUBS Jurges singled. ODea batted for Lee and broke his bat on the second pitch, forcing Jurges, Crosetti to Gordon. Hack hit into a double play, Gordon to Crosetti to Gehrig. No runs. One hit. NINTH INNING. YANKEES Russell pitching for the Cubs. Gordon flied to Reynolds. Ruffing bounced out, Herman to Collins. Crosettis fly got away from Collins and he got a double. Herman threw out Rolfe. No runs. One hit. CUBS Herman flied to DiMaggio. Demaree flied to Selkirk. Caveretta hit to right, the ball bouncing up to hit Henrich in the face.
