LEGENDA MAKES GOOD TIME Runs Mile and Seventy Yards at Latonia in 1:45. Track Off for Wednesdays Sport Gibson Hotel Purse Main Event on Card at Covington. LATONIA, Ky., Oct. 5 Legenda carried the colors of C. L. Croan, Kentucky racing commissioner, to one of her outstanding triumphs in accounting for the Gibson Hotel Purse, sixth race and the best event. Running the mile and seventy yards over the off-track in the splendid time of 1:45, Legenda came to the finish well in hand and a length before J. W. Parrishs The Whale. Torchy, an odds-on choice, was third, two and one-half lengths farther back. Star Banner, which finished fourth, worked out a mile and one furlong for her Latonia Cup engagement in 1:54, and Jeffersontbwn, another probable eligible, worked out one and one-quarter miles in 2:11. George South handled the Croan filly in fine style. When outrun by the speedy Torchy, South took Legenda in hand and he steadied her along until near the final half mile, where he sent her alongside the favorite. Forging to the front approaching the stretch, Legenda drew clear rapidly and South had her under restraint when The Whale came with his belated challenge. Star Banner trailed the field to the stretch, where she wore down Jeffersontown and Al-High to finish six lengths in Torchys wake. LONG SHOT MAKES GOOD. Showing a preference for the sloppy racing strip, Flightaway, a 49 to 1 shot, made every post a winning one in annexing the first race for plater maidens and winners of one race. Although bearing out badly during the final furlong, the four-year-old daughter of Flight of Time came to the finish of a mile and seventy yards a length and one-half before Inskip, with Ducah third. Juraboy and Valvesta shared favoritism but both appeared not to relish the off-track and showed little to merit their support. Turning in a brilliant effort, Burger arid Murdocks Zipaway was the winner of the second race for which Doc Jock, the fourth horse, was the favorite. Away slowly and forced to circle his field when improving his position, Zipaway, a son of Rhinock and Chiz, wore down the pacemaking Irish Setter after reaching the final furlong and the-finish of the three-quarters dash found him a length and a half before the Dixiana gelding which finished second. A little more than a length separated the pair at the end, with Lady Briar a half length back of Honey Chile and a head before Flush, the fourth horse. Charlton was astride his second straight ! winner when he steered Moon Bow Miss to her initial success in the fifth event, for plater two-year-olds and over a mile and 3eventy yards. Oblivious, like the winner, neglected in the wagering, was second, and Dddesa Agnes, third. Stanislaus, the favor- i ite, finished fourth, after having a rough journey. j
