EARL DEW CONTINUES TO STAR Iowa Youngster Displaying- Superb Saddle Form at Fairmount. Close Finishes Thrill Collinsville Fans-Lena J. Finishes Two Lengths in Front in Second. COLLINSVILLE, 111., Oct. 5. Upsets of a mild nature which, in a number of events were the second choices in the wagering, marked the program of races offered at Fairmount Park this afternoon. A large week-day crowd, taking advantage of the ideal weather which prevailed, witnessed some interesting sport, enlivened by close finishes and a continuation of the brand of riding displayed by the promising young apprentice, Earl Dew, an Iowa lad making good here in the saddle. Dew was astride his second winner of the afternoon when he brought A. R. Manns Lena J. across the finish line some two lengths before Then Some to account for the fifth race. Big One finished third, three lengths farther back, and Margaret Nadi was fourth in the field of ten routers which went at a mile and seventy yards. As the field was dispatched from a good start, Lena J. sped to the front, but shortly thereafter was taken back by Dew, while Margaret Nadi went into a slight lead, which she maintained for the first half-mile of the journey. After the first part of the trip had been negotiated, Dew began urging Lena J. forward and the daughter of Spanish Prince II. responded well to dispose of Margaret Nadi and, racing in front of the field, increased her lead as she came to the finish holding an easy margin of victory at the end. Margaret Nadi tired fast after relinquishing the lead to the ultimate winner and dropped back thereafter to finish fourth. Then Some, which came from far back, reached second position after racing past Margaret Nadi in the stretch and held an easy margin for the place over Big One, which also raced through the field to reach third place. Today was Knights of the Cauliflower Ear Day at Fairmount Park, honoring a group of St. Louis sportsmen and the large delegation from that organization was enter- tained in the clubhouse by the management. Apprentice jockey Ray Conner was astride his second straight winner of the afternoon when he guided Zat So to an easy victory Continued on thirty-ninth page.
