ACCOLADE HANDICAP VICTOR Old Gelding Scores His Fifth 1938 Victory- Over Laurel Course. Best Program of Meeting Entertains Good-Sized Crowd Dotter Displays Biding Skill. LAUREL, Md., Oct. 5. Returning to the form that made him one of the best sprinters in New England during the summer months, ccolade, eight-year-old. son of Bright Knight Celebration, racing for Donald Christmas, achieved his fifth success in eleven starts this year when he accounted for the Grade A handicap, fifth and featured event on the lid-week program at Laurel Park today, S pposed by five other seasoned sprinters, the elderly gelding, under the perfect handling pf jockey Robert Dotter, ran the three-quarters distance in the fastest time of the four-day-old meeting and registered under a mild drive one length before John A. Manfusos Ane?oid. Third money was captured by A. C. Comptons Sun Egret, and Finance was fourth, taking the measure of Gold Flag and Scabbard, the only other starters. Accolade was top weight of the party, under 119 pounds, and sped the distance in 1:12. With the program the best here sinee opening day, a crowd of good size was out for the entertainment. Ideal weather prevailed and several thrilling races kept enthusiasm high. Only seven races made up the card, with the Class A, B and C handicaps drawing most interest. START DELAYED. In the Class A handicap that was the programmed feature several minutes were wasted at the stalls before the half dozen starters left in good order, and it found Acco-Jade first away. Jockey Dotter had the gelding stepping along busily in the early part, While Sun Egret and Finance raced abreast to force the pace. Aneroid, saving ground, raced in fourth place. The early pace provided by Accolade was a swift one when the first half mile was run in :46, and this soon .beat Sun Egret as he attempted to overhaul . the Christmas sprinter. With a half mile covered and the stretch reached Accolade, drew clear for the first to open up a length and one-half mar-., and for the remainder of the journey fie, 3 nursed nicely to meet the bid of Aneroid, the closing stages Sun Ecret wilted, to beaten three lengths for second place, but Jcept going long enough to be one length before Finance and Gold Fla, which were out the middle of the track, heads apart. Trainer L. J. Schaefer saddled his second consecutive winner for the W. L. Brarin staple when Aethelwold, from the maiden class, was -best in a field of nondescript maidens in the decision of the second race. This was a gallop of a mile and seventy yards and Aethelwold was decidedly best when he led for all of the journey to account for his success, without being extended.
