May 9— The ,500 added Spring Maiden Steeplechase, in previous years a series of three events at Delaware Park. Belmont Park and Aqueduct, will be limited to the Stanton course this year. Construction work at Belmont and Aqueduct precludes running the New York events, thus Delaware Park remains the bastion of steeplechase sport this season. The Spring Maiden Steeplechase, one of 15 major features to be renewed at Delaware Park during the 32-day meeting open-j ing on May 29. is contested at about two miles and will be run on June 21. Donald P. Ross. Delaware Park president, and William duPont Jr. of the execu-: tive committee, are devotees of steeple-1 chasing and have fostered the sport here in face of increasing competition from tracks in contiguous states encroaching up-I on traditional Delaware Park dates and the subsequent loss of state revenue. The Spring Maiden Steeplechase is one of four steeplechase features in addition to a schedule of hurdle and overnight jump- ing events. The other features carry 0,-1 000 added purse monies — Tom Roby Steep- lechase, June 10: Georgetown Steeple-f chase Handicap. June 14: and Indian River Steeplechase Handicap. June 28.
