37 Canadian-Breds Still Eligible to Queens Plate Nine-Furlong Sophomore Stakes Carded June 8 at New Woodbine OLD WOODBINE PARK. Toronto. Canada, May 9. — The Ontario Jockey Club announced today that 37 Canadian-bred three-year-olds still are eligible for next months renewal of the historic Queens Plate. The 98th running of the Queens Plate — which is North Americas oldest annual stakes race — will be» contested at the 3,000,000 new Woodbine course on Saturday, June 8. The distance, of the plate, this year, will be one mile and one quarter. In recent years Canadas turf classic has been raced at one mile and one eighth. The Plate Trial, at one mile and one sixteenth, will be contested at new Woodbine on Monday, June 3. This years prospective field was reduced to 37 when a payment of 00 became due on May 1. When nominations for the race closed on December 15, 1955, 219 colts, fillies and geldings were named and a 0 fee was paid tor each nomination. A fur ther payment of 5 became due last De- I cember 15, and, on that occasion, the field was reduced to 87. Owners must pay another 50 for each candidate which is named through the entry box the day before the race. The Ontario Jockey Club posts a purse of 5,000 for the Queens Plate additionally, her majesty. Queen Elizabeth, donates 50 guineas to the winning owner. With nomination fees, interim payments and starting fees, this years renewal of the race will have a gross value of more than 5,000. Lad Ator, the colt bred by the late James G. Fair and purchased a few months ago by Mrs.. M. J. Boylen for a reported 7,-500, is rated a split choice in the "futures" with Ellins and Parrs Alis Pride, a 0,000 yearling purchase, to win this years Queens Plate. Alis Pride won his only start this year in easy fashion over at Fort Erie and worked a mile yesterday in 1:42, handily. Lad Ator made his seasonal racing debut at Old Woodbine on Wednesday and finished third, beaten nearly three lengths in a six and one -half furlongs event. Two highly regarded colts which havent appeared so far this season are Mrs. E. P. Taylors Chopadette and E. P. , Taylors Lyford Cay.
