Rosewood Rosewood Victorious Victorious in in New New Jersey; Jersey; Grey Grey Lag Lag Field Field May May Number Number Twelve Twelve Midafternoon Now Doubtful Starter Third Brother and Oh Johnny Awaiting Jamaicas 0,000 Handicap at Nine Furlongs By BOB NORWOOD JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y.. May 9.— Though Mrs. E. E. Robbins topweighted Midafternoon is doubtful, a field of nine, and possibly a dozen, is expected for Saturdays Grey Lag Handicap. Midafternoon, winner of the Excelsior Handicap here last out, was given a steadying 128 pounds and it was learned this afternoon that he is unlikely to accept it. This is two pounds more than he carried in the Excelsior and represents a three-pound shift in favor of King Ranchs Beam Rider, who was less than a length behind. The probable starting topweight in the week-end mile and one furlong will be C. T. Chenerys Third Brother at 120 pounds, including Bill Boland. This is one pound more than will be carried by Mrs. Wallace Gilroys Oh Johnny, who became an almost certain starter when it was learned that Midafternoon would probably decline the issue. Hedley Woodhouse, as usual, is to ride the son of Johns Joy, surprise winner of a sprint in his last start here, and who got part of the purse in no less than 13 stakes, most of them at a distance, last year, while winning three. Third Brother turned in a disappointing race in his last start here, after racing well against Dedicate in Maryland, but trainer J. H. "Casey" Hayes anticipates sharp improvement since he has been working on the deep training track at Belmont Park. Kingmaker to Carry 116 The other probables in the Grey Lag are, in order of the weights. Happy Hill Farms Kingmaker, 116: J. J. Crowleys First Served. Mrs. C. Ulrick Bays Greek Spy and Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Paper Tiger, 114 each; R. O. J. Streubers Pylades, 111; King Ranchs Beam Rider. 109, and E. H. Woods Mighty Chief. 107. There is also a chance that Mrs. Elizabeth N. Graham will want to start Maine Chance Farms Jet Action, 123, with Mrs. Wallace Gilroys Oh Johnny, 119, and F. Eugene Dixons Manor Wise, 105, also possibilities for the week-end fixture. Bobby Ussery has been named for Kingmaker, who is in fine form. No rider has been named for Beam Rider, who finished second to Midafternoon in his last two starts. Ted Atkinson, who has been riding the King Ranch four-year-old, has an engagement on Greentree Stables Maharajah at Pimlico in the Dixie that afternoon. Eddie Arcaro will pilot First Served, winner of the Royal Palm Handicap at Hia-leah, second to Bardstown in the Appleton at Gulf stream, and winner here over Paper Tiger and Third Brother. First Served appeared to "steal that race with a false pace, but there is nothing in the Grey Lag with any more speed than Grey Phantom, who couldnt outrun the Discovery gelding. Eric Guerin is to ride Greek Spy, P. J. Bailey will be on Paper Tiger, Raul Sterling is to guide Pylades, a steadily improving horse, while no boy has yet been engaged for Mighty Chief. If Manor Wise, who starts in almost everything for which he is eligible, should go postward, he will be coupled with the rejuvenated Mighty Chief.
