Familiar Handicap Stars Will Race at Ak-Sar-Ben Silver State, Ji+jnmy the One and Vino Supremo Coming to Omaha OMAHA. Nebr.. May 9. — Ak-Sar-Bens handicap division will be bolstered by many familiar names during the 35-day meeting which begins May 21. Many of the owners of last years handicap stars have asked for stalls at the forthcoming meeting and have expressed their intention of having their horses on the grounds by opening day. Most of the horses are now racing at Bay Meadows and Sportsmans Park near Chicago and will ship immediately following the close of those meetings. Those handicap and stakes performers who are expected in shortly are: Olen Sledges Jimmy the One, E. K. Careys Silver State, M. H. "Bud" Robineaus Vino Supremo. Guy and Walter Shultzs Butch K., and Wayne Davidsons Freedoms Pride. Vino Supremo, who is trained by E. E. Presnell, won last years ,500 J. E. Davidson Memorial Handicap at six furlongs. In that stakes the Ak-Sar-Ben sprint champion equaled the track record of 1:09%. Jimmy the One and Silver State will both be back in Omaha during the 1957 season to continue their rivalry which proved so interesting last year. The pair met over a distance of ground on several occasions each gaining highly contested victories, but when the "big ones," the George Brandeis Memorial and the Ak-Sar-Ben Handicap, came up for decision, Silver State gained narrow victories in both. The Ak-Sar-Ben meeting will have a total purge distribution of 00,000. The minimum purse offering will be ,900. with overnight handicaps carrying a purse of ,000. Racing secretary Kenneth Mcintosh had the stall applications of 3,200 horses to choose from, assuring the finest group of thoroughbreds that has ever been stabled at Ak-Sar-Ben since its opening.
