Commission Approves Officials at Longacres Expect Director of Racing Webb To Return for June 7 Opening SEATTLE. Wash.. May 9.— The Washington Horse Racing Commission has approved the Longacres slate of officials for the 1957 season. The track is scheduled to open Friday. June 7. The commission, consisting of Chairman William Fitzgerald of Seattle, Emmett T. rtennesey of Spokane and the recently appointed new commissioner, Joel B. Staa-decker of Seattle, did not act on any of its own officials for the forthcoming season. Announcement of the presiding steward, representing the state, and other officials is expected soon. Longacres announced that director of racing Webb Everett was expected to return to his post for the season. Steve ODonnell was named racing secretary and Pete Pedersen will return as director of publicity and steward. Pedersen, a native of Seattle, will be serving his second year as steward at the Seattle track. Pedersen started his racing career at Longacres and has handled publicity there for many years. ODonnell has been in thoroughbred racing all his adult life and was once a jockey. Other officials who will return for the 1957 season are: Presiding judge. Mort Carraher; associate judge, William J. Coyle; starter, Eugene Kennedy: clerk of the scales, Joseph Wittman: paddock judge, William Morris; official timer, Joseph Wittman: track veterinarian, Dr. Robert Strong, and mutuel manager, Kenneth Hodges. Staadecker, the new commissioner ap- pointed by Gov. Albert Rosellini, is an insurance executive and has been active in Seattle civic affairs. He also is a breeder of thoroughbreds, having bred and raced last years winner of the Washington Futurity. Ambolero. He fills the Washington racing law requirement that one of the members of the commission shall be a breeder.
