Invaders Will Clash With Local Talent In Saturdays Delaware Valley Stakes Clem, Soft Day, King Hairan* To Face Barbizon, Princeton, Irate and Others at Camden By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 9. — Three invaders are expected to challenge from eight to 12 localities in Saturdays 5,000 added Delaware Valley Stakes, second of eight stakes renewals on the Garden State Park spring agenda. The Delaware Valley, exclusively for three -year-olds, is at six furlongs. Adele L. Rands Clem and Mrs. John T. Maloneys Soft Day have joined Leo Edwards and Harry B. Masseys King Hairan to form the invading trio. They are expected to battle Calumet Farms Barbizon, William G. Helis Jr.s True Verdict, Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Bakht, Woodland Farms High Sparkle, R. T. Curleys Supper Money, Carolyn K. Stables Pro-Brandy, Brookfield Farms Irate and Harford Stables Princeton. A question mark hovers over four others still rated possible starters. One is Helis Pearl Prince, who would be coupled with True Verdict. Harry Wells is still undecided about Raritan Stables Base Runner. Should he go his running-mate would be High Sparkle. Trainer Everett King feels P and W Stables Lucky George has a 50-50 chance of starting. John S. Kellys Wassail, unplaced in the Delaware Valley Trial, also is in the "maybe" category. Of the two late arrivals Clem would appear to have the better chance. The Shannon II. colt won the Absecon Island last year and this semester has scored once, and ran creditable thirds in the Swift and Gotham Stakes at Jamaica. Soft Day won a sprint in Maryland, then he was unplaced in the Governors Gold Cup, his single stakes engagement thus far this year. During his juvenile campaign the son of Devil Diver won four races, including the Marlboro Nursery. Trainer Lenny Hunt had King Hairan on the track this morning for a leisurely gallop. His final blowout comes Friday. He won the Swift this spring. Much interest centers on Barbizon, who would be making his first return engagement over the strip since winning The Garden State last fall. Irate also becomes an interesting candidate. The Son of General Staff, unraced at two, made his debut here Tuesday and won by 15 lengths. This remarkable performance induced trainer Eddie Kelly to send him against major competition in his second outing. The horse-rider combinations become clearer with the announcement of several engagements. Willie Hartack rides Barbizon, Sam Boulmetis gets the call on High Sparkle, Joe Culmone handles Irate, Howard Grant will be up on Pro-Brandy and Bobby Martin rides True Verdict. No rid-lers have been assigned the invaders.
