In Balmoral Opener Monday HOMEWOOD, 111., May 9.— Chicago-owned Lori-EI, fresh from her victory in the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs, on Derby eve, checked in at Washington Park today and immediately began preparations as one of the favorites for Mondays 5,000 added Coronet Stakes, opening-day headliner of Balmorals 1957 spring season at the Homewood track. Lori-EI, property of Chicagoans Michael Soto and A. E. Berke, is racings latest "bargain baby," a 00 purchase at the 1955 yearling sales. She already has banked 6,000 and stamped herself a filly of great speed and distance ability in routing a crack field in last weeks Churchill stakes. Lori-EI will head a probable starting field of about 10 fillies in Mondays six-furlong Coronet. Likely Starting Field At the moment. Mondays field shapes up with Lori-EI against Mrs. William Veene-mans Woodlawn, winner of last years Pollyanna at Arlington Park: Walmac Farms Alice Van Meter, second in her latest Churchill Downs start: Hasty House Farms promising Bluebility; T. The Coronet is the first of Balmorals 10 feature stakes attractions which will total 55,000 in added money. Lori-EI was bedded down along with four other Soto and Berke owned thoroughbreds. Soto, admittedly "still in the clouds" over Lori-Els smashing Kentucky Oaks triumph, said: Shes real good now. and shell be at her best for Mondays opening day stakes. Were happy were able to bring a top stakes winner to Chicago and we are confident shell show the fans her finest form." Lori-EI has started eight times this season, winning four, including the Oaks, and finished second behind Jota Jota in Keene- lands historic Ashland Stakes. She also was third behind colts in the Arkansas Derby at Hot Springs. Last year. Lori-EI won five of eight starts, including a sprint victory over colts here during the 1956 Balmoral meeting.
