St. Vincent Works Fast Over Turf Dixie Highweight Sent Mile in 1:39 £ Johnny Longden Will Pilot Horse Against Jabneh and Others at Pimlico Tomorrow By PALMER HEAGERTY PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md.. May 9 —In a sparkling prep for Saturdays 5,000 added Dixie Handicap, Alberta Ranches, Ltd.s St. Vincent this morning moved a mile over the Pimlico turf course in 1:3943. giving assurance that he will perform creditably under his highweight of 125 pounds. With trainer Vance Longden in the irons, the six-year-old English-bred was unhurried through the opening half in :5123, then rambled the final half in :4825- The third quarter was the best of the eight -furlong trip, being timed in :23%. Johnny Longden. father of St. Vincents trainer, will be on hand for the week-end engagement and should enjoy the mount on a dead-fit campaigner. The Dixie, at a mile and three furlongs, was the scene of St. Vincents world speed mark of 2:15% and, considering the condition of the local grass course, that mark could be in danger. Jabneh Winner of Hialeah Turf Cap Other fairly definite Dixie starters at this time are: Mrs. Eugenia E. Bankheads Jabneh, winner of the 5,000 added Hialeah Turf Handicap during the winter, 120; C. Mahlon Klines Lofty Peak, who established a course record of 1:4045 for about i a mile and one-sixteenth on the grass at Laurel, 120; Douglas R. Smalls Aeschylus. Laurel Spring Turf Handicap winner, 118; Mrs. Harry L. Nathensons Blue Choir, 116; Cockfield Stables Akbar Khan, 113; Greentree Stables Maharajah, 112, which is to include Ted Atkinson; and possibly one or two others. Lazy F. Ranchs Lagides and John M. Schiffs Muguet II., both of whom are conditioned by Oleg T. Dubasoff, arrived on the scene today and one. or both, of them probably will be in the Dixie field. Muguet II. has been assigned 109 pounds, while Lagides is the lightweight of 22 nominees under 105 pounds. While the Dixie and the climactic Preak-; ness are of prime interest at this time, the j steady progress of Christiana Stables J route-running Thinking Cap has been very I pleasing. This fellow, who last season accounted for the Stymie and Merchants and I Citizens Handicaps, then concluded his campaign with a second in the Pimlico Cup, this morning worked a mile in 1 :45% on the main track. Trainer Henry Clark has nominated him for the Mr,. Fitz Handicap, one week from tomorrow, and there is a possibility that the race will mark his seasonal bow.
