T. wintered at Washington, N. C, and is a popular performer in northern Ohio. Dynamo is expected to perform Saturday night in the featured ,500 pace. May 9. — Painesville Raceway will swing into its 44-night meeting Friday evening with the largest list of nominations — 690 — for the 20 early-closing events in the history of the U.S. Route No. 20 plant. The half-miler will be under the direction of Walter J. Michael. Bucyrus, Ohio, industrialist, who is chairman of the board, and Don H. Roberts, president for the first time. Michael and Roberts are the successful operators of Grandview, located near Solon. Ohio along with McKinley Kirk. ► Washington Court House, Ohio, and Harvey Klink. Bucyrus, Ohio. The combination of Michael and Roberts is expected to give northern Ohio trotting fans another successful operation where the thousands of patrons who gather can watch skillful drivers whip those babies down the homestretch. The Michael-Roberts combine purchased the Painesville operating lease from Saul Silberman last February. The new operators of Painesville will have many improvements to display tomorrow night. Chief items which will greet the fans will be a complete new tote board which is a full totalisator and the visu-matic timer. The racing strip has been trenched and will be much quicker to drain after spring rains. Other improvements in- elude lighting of the track, glass enclosing of the dining room, and the general renovation of the grandstand and clubhouse area. Ready to defend his drivers title which he won last season is the hometown boy, Dick Richardson. The Painesville, Ohio native went to the post 98 times last year and gained 21 wins. 20 seconds, and 13 thirds. The runner-up last year. Denzil Berry is also back. Berry started 64 times j won 18. had nine seconds and 12 thirds. Wayne "Curly" Smart and Del Miller, two well-known Grand Circuit drivers will have horses at Painesville. Richardson will pilot the trotters and pacers in the R. W. Sidley Stable of Painesville. while another northern Ohio favorite, Johnny Hague will handle the stable of Clevelander Byron D. Kuth. The Kuth stable has been cam-j paigning successfully at Maywood Park near Chicago. Other prominent reinsmen who will be i seen at Painesville are: Carl Larson, Dal-ton Hodgins, Bob Vallery, Don Irvine. Jimmy Siewerski, Clark McCoy. Lawrence Green. Virgil Butt.. Denny Moore, and Adrian Burgett. The first stake event, a ,000 trot on Friday night had a field of 20 nominated. Included were: Bold Lass, Butler Comet, Colonel Pal, DeVan Morris. Dutch Mary. Gayola. Johnnie McElwyn. Louis, Miss Trystrong, Musketeer, Onyx, Ray Scot, Silver Downy, Silver Pheasant, Siren Hanover. Solon Hanover, Sky Ballad. Spud Parrish, Sunny V, and Victory Pick. On Saturday in the ,500 pace such well-known pacers as Chief Ensign, Clever J. T., Dynamo, Ebon Spencer, Freeport, General Dean, Golden Ella, Minnewashta, Pickwick, Shorty Eden, Waywind, and Widow -Abbe are slated for action. Last year, the half-miler drew a total of 97,771 fans in 42 nights and had a tote handle of ,884,534 for a nightly average of 2,488
