Jones Sophomore Molds Half-Length Edge at Downs; Louise Parham Victorious By DON FAIR CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville. Ky., May 9. — L. G. Jones Cosmic Force, an altered son of Cosmic Bomb and Starlit, well ridden by Johnny Ralph Adams, sped to a half-length decision here this summerlike afternoon* in the Billings Purse before a crowd of 8.000 spectators. The Jones gelding was under severe pressure during the late stages of the six and one-half furlongs test to overtake Exchange Stables Jet Sub, who was three-quarters of a length before W. B. Stones Prince Torch for second honors. Eight better -than-average three-year-olds met in the Billings and W. G. Reynolds Prince Killer salvaged fourth money. Third Choice in Field Cosmic Force shouldered 118 pounds under the Billings allowances and raced over the fast track in 1:1825. He was no better than third choice in the straight tote pool and those backing him received 17 to 5. Jet Sub had the highest speed away from the stalls and the Exchange Stable colt led the field until well inside the home lane. Cosmic Force was always in nearest attendance to the pacemaker and it was apparent as the two leaders settled for the drive that a close battle was evident. Johnny Delahoussaye wen£ right after Jet Sub, his mount responding readily, but Cosmic Force had a little too much and was along in the last sixteenth mile for a well-deserved decision. Prince Torch raced evenly the entire trip and might have been a sharper factor had he held to a straighter course in the drive. The Stone Stable colt-was an easy third, it being more than four lengths back to Prince Killer. W. G. Reynolds Louise Parham, a homebred Desert Ration filly handled by Jack Skelly, was hustled to a length verdict in the six furlongs sixth race. The Reynolds miss was under a strong ride during the stretch run to whip Tom Settles Norwin G.. who was another length on James Jennings Sr.s Marti Diana for the place award. Joseph Mallias Tillie Temple was along for fourth in the field of nine three-year-olds. Louise Parham, clocked in 1:12%, went to the post at 27 to 5. Royal Poise, who races for Mrs. W. P. Schwartz and Chester F. Bowles, responded to a hustling ride from S. Brucemi and downed seven useful sprinters in the six furlongs fifth. Royal Poise saved ground the entire trip and, after taking command during the final furlong, stepped under the wire with a length and a quarter advantage over T. Alie Grissoms favored Inah-moud. J. Graham Browns On the Job, who led through the initial four furlongs, lasted for third, a head back of the choice, while Kenneth Burkharts Noble Warrior saved fourth money. Royal Poise, a fair class winner in Florida, completed her journey in 1:126 and paid 4.40 straight. William F. Lucas Jestress, handled by Dave Erb, trimmed seven three-year-old rivals in the three-quarters mile fourth event and returned her backers 33 to 10. In post race ceremonies, Churchill Downs general superintendent Tpm Young presented Erb with a handsome trophy, symbolic of Erbs victory astride Needles in the 1956 Kentucky Derby. T. . Alie Grissoms Litte Reaper, with Johnny Ralph Adams in the irons, coasted to a six lengths decision in the Bringhurst Purse, decisively defeating 11 two-year-olds. Litte Reaper, a candidate for the Bashford Manor Stakes, led for the major part of the five-eighths mile, posting a :59%, which time he might have bettered under pressure. Litte Reaper, a son of Hypothetical and Miss Militant, was a 4-to-5 chance in the wagering. A. L. Coopers Running Rein, handled by Sherman Armstrong, beat a capacity field of three-year-olds in the six furlongs opener and Exchange Stables Pipit was best of the dozen sophomores meeting in the three-quarters mile second. Running Rein, 6.60 straight, and Pipit, .60, combined for a 33.80 Daily Double return.
