Mt. Vernon Purse Holds Cahokia Downs Spotlight Skin Junior, Miss Burke to Vie With Five Others This Evening By J. J. HAHN CAHOKIA DOWNS, East St. Louis, 111., June 4. The Mt. Vemon Purse, honoring the downstate city where many southern Illinois horsemen make their homes, is the main event here tomorrow night. The event, a six and one-half furlongs dash, to be used as the sixth race, heads a fine midweek program arranged by racing secretary L. Henderson Van Zandt. In addition to the feature there are many other good heats, including the fourth, a five furlongs dash for higher-bracket claimers, the one mile and an eighth that brings together horses of the ,250 claiming class and the fifth which includes many winners at the meeting. The main event drew only seven prospective starters including many local favorites and it should develop into a stirring contest and finish. Heading the event in which Mayor Virgil I. Bailey of Mt. Vernon will present a blanket to the winner, are George J. Schatz consistent Skin Junior who is being asked to pick up 121 pounds, five more than Miss Burke, who is at the top of her form. Also going for the long end of the purse is Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Holmans Eternal Frolic, the Red Diamond Stables Clynon and the Sterling Farms Admiral Jose, a recent arrival from the Chicago area. All three are equally unposted at 111 pounds. J. F. Harpers Bonnie Gains drew 106 pounds and J. L. Clevelands Chic Betty-ann, a four-year-old filly, like Bonnie Gains, gets in at 101 pounds since her trainer, Russell L. Mitchell, claimed the five pounds apprentice allowance and probably will entrust the daughter of Coastal Traffic to apprentice William P. "Peanuts" McCadden who recently won the initial race of his riding career and who is showing steady improvement in his saddle work. The fourth drew eight starters and named to go in this five furlongs dash are Easter B., Circuit Judge, Carol Storme, Pachita, TJ. S. Rocket, Her Chance, Hy Apache and Make. The sprint is named the Mt. Vernon Chamber of Commerce and a large delegation from the southern Illinois city is expected to be on hand for the nine-race program. The eight, at one mile, embraces such middle distance performers as Abbess Quest, Laydown, Lady Joker, Final Leave, Brady Lane, Moon of Hearts and Mucho-Frio. Post Time for the first race is the usual 8:30 Central Daylight Time.
