Pennyworth Upset Victor at Thistle Paul Ward Astride Murphy Charge; Breaks Three-Way Tie for Saddle Leadership By Staff Correspondent THISTLEDOWN, North Randall, Ohio, June 4. Another excellent week-day crowd of approximately 5,200 fans were on hand today and saw jockey Paul A. Ward ride his ninth winner of the- meeting and second of the afternoon by piloting F. C. Murphys Colquitt Stables Pennyworth to "an upset score in the fourth race. The event brought together a full band of sophomores at the sprint distance of six furlongs with each entered for ,500. The score aboard Pennyworth placed Ward two victories to the good over his nearest rivals, Buck Thornburg and Clarence Meaux who are preesntly tied for second position. Defeats Favorite, Royal Major Pennyworth paid 6.40 to win after running the distance in 1:13 over a fast track. He held but a necks, decision at the wire, over Herb Jolleys Royal Major, favorite of the event, with Gerace and Tals Erin Lad finishing another length and one -half back. Wards previous winner of the afternoon came aboard another longshot, Louis Pascals Bete Noir, in the second race, paying 5.60 and completing another huge pay-off in the Daily Double return, with the amount posted reading 12.00 for those who had coupled Bete Noir with J. Davidsons Starmist, winner of the opening event. Starmist, making only the second start of his career, defeated eleven two-year-old maidens and paid 6.40 to win.
