Whirlaway Colt Wins Franco Stakes Over 11 Furlongs Special to Daily Racing Form MADRID, Spain, June 4. Reuters. Senor Ramon Beamontes five-year-old colt, Whirly, who is a son of the American sire, Whirlaway, out of the French-bred Montario, won the 55,000 pesetas Franco Stakes over 11 furlongs here Sunday. Whirly ran unsuccessfully in England in 1954 and 1955. He scored by three lengths over Articuza, with Zyar Zun four lengths far the r back in the eight-horse field. Whirly was ridden by J. Perelli. General Franco, who donated the silver cup for the winning owner, did not attend but Gen. Esteban Infantes deputized and presented the trophy.
