UNITED PRESS 1 NEWS 1 BRIEFS NATIONAL: Army Ready for Brush. Fire Wars WEST POINT, N. Y., June 4. Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor, Army chief of staff, said today the Army is ready to handle any small "brush fire" wars that might spring up without warning. He also said it is "of the utmost importance" that the Army continues to have mobile reserves ready to put down such wars before they can spread into a "great nuclear conflagration." Deny Charges of Contiminaring Fish WASHINGTON, D. C., June 4. The Atomic Energy Commission today denied charges by Dr. Albert Schweitzer that radioactive waste dumped into the Columbia River is seriously contaminating fish. Commission Chairman Lewis L. Strauss took issue with the famed humanitarian-physician in a letter to Sen. Henry M. Jackson D., Wash.. Strauss said humans could eat a pound of fish a day from the Columbia "year in and year out" and still not be hurt by radioactivity from wastes discarded in the river by the Hanford, Wash., Atomic Works. Wildcat Strike Idles 175 Buses PATTERSON, N. J., June 4. A "wildcat strike" of 260 bus drivers shut down the Inter-City Transportation Co., today and caught more than 15,000 New York-New Jersey commuters by surprise. Tlie drivers failed to appear for work at 4 a. m., and idled 175 buses used along 12 routes in Bergen and Passaic counties in New Jersey and Sullivan County-in New York. Reed Temporary as Claims Court Judge WASHINGTON, D. C, June 4. Retired Supreme Court Justice Stanley F. Reed has taken a temporary job as member of the U. S. Court of Claims. Reed, who retired from the Supreme bench February 25, will replace Chief Marvin Jones on the Court of Claims to hear a case from which Jones disqualified himself. It will be the first time a retired Supreme Court justice has sat as a member .of the claims court. Order Contempt Against Beck Kin WASHINGTON, D. C, June 4. Chairman John L. McClellan of the Senate Rackets Committee today ordered contempt of Congress action against the son and nephew of Teamsters president Dave Beck. Young Dave refused to say whether he and his father had any business relationships. He also refused to say whether he had been engaged in "any legitimate, lawful business." FOREIGN: Discount Rumors of Pahlevi Command KARACHI, Pakistan, June 4. The chairman of the Military Committee of the Baghdad Pact today discounted reports that Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlevi of Iran would assume command of the joint Pact forces. Toll in Bomb Blast Now Numbers Nine ALGIERS, Algeria, June 4. Three more persons died today, bringing to nine the number killed by three time bombs set off by Nationalist rebels in a crowded Algiers street last night. Russia Charges NATO, United States LONDON, England, June 4. Moscow Radio lashed out at NATO again today and charged that the United States was using Norway as an "unsinkable aircraft carrier" for its "aggressive plans." Soviet May Introduce Counter-Proposal LONDON, England, June 4. The Soviet Union, annoyed at American delay in introducing a new disarmament proposal, may incorporate parts of the new U. S. plan in a counter-proposal of its own. U. S. Disarmament Chief Harold E. Stas-sen flew to London last week with a new American plan, but has not yet officially presented it to the five-nation U. N. Disarmament Subcommittee in London. Allied Embargo Regretable Kishi TAIPEI, Formosa, June 4. Japanese Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi said today that Britains "unilateral decision" to break the Allied embargo against Communist China is "regretable." Britain Ends Ban on Dollar Spending LONDON, England, June 4. The government announced today the end of the austerity measure which has prevented British tourists from freely visiting the United States and other dollar-area countries since World War H. The termination of Britains ban on dollar spending was announced in the House of Commons by Chancellor of the Exchequer Peter Thorn-eycroft. He said that tourists will be allowed to use up to 10 pounds 80 a year in the dollar areas from now to the end of October.
